  • The federal government benefits from higher gas prices. Each 10 cent increase in the price of gasoline raises Ottawa’s GST revenues by $100-million.
  • As a deficit reduction measure in 1995, Ottawa increased the federal gasoline tax from 8.5 to 10 cents per litre. Yet, even though budgets have been balanced since fiscal 1997/98, Ottawa has collected $6-billion from its so-called “deficit elimination tax.” In 1985, the excise tax was just 1.5 cents per litre.
  • In opposition, the Conservatives made repeated promises to remove the GST tax-on-tax bite and pledged to remove the GST completely when gasoline prices exceeded 85 cents per litre. In the summer of 2005, Mr. Harper was quoted saying that gas taxes could be reduced by as much as 5 cents a litre.
  • Three Conservative budgets have failed to lower gas taxes although roadway spending is substantially increased.

How much tax am I paying per litre? It depends on where you fill your tank. In 2005, taxes in Canada represented on average 35% of the pump price versus 20% in the U.S.

What's yer point?

You like paying international rates for gasoline instead of negotiating with regional suppliers for your consumable resources?.....

Maybe if you debated with a civil tongue instead of ranting with implied profanity you would get more respect. Also if you used some logic, that would help as well. If you can get it through your rock head that the Conservatives don't set the prices, that might help, too.

When a Conservative government "pushes it down their throats"....as I 'd paraphrase a comment by Brian Mulroney.... when it comes to regulating trade to the benefit of American industry.....I'd suggest to you that in fact the Conservatives DID establish the cost structures.

Hey Risus, with respect to freedom of expression Mulroney is on record making comments about Canadians while the F word was a part of his vocabulary behind closed doors “STUFF IT DOWN YOUR THROAT” was Mulroney’s popular phrase.

Risus, do you ever look at the polls? The Federal Conservatives are like a v8 that is running on one cylinder, for your information that cylinder is called Harper. He is becoming unpopular by the minute. He has ministers assigned to various posts but they are not allowed to speak. Harper is the translator for all of them. Now do you know anything about the Canadian Conservative history? If you do you will go back to the days Mulroney came into power with the biggest landslide victory and WENT OUT LOOKING LIKE DRIED UP DOG S HIT. SINGLE HANDEDLY REDUCED THE cons to nothing but ruble. Do you remember that Risus? Now Harper is on a similar path. The transparent Con is so transparent he is about to start looking like Casper the friendly ghost. We are in North America the land of the free not the land of drop your pants.
Don’t bundle up other parts of the world. The North American continent is oil rich but the strategy is let’s buy oil from third world countries in order to buy it cheap and sell it to North Americans, tax the f uck out of it and oops we just arrived at gouging land. You can sit here and ask if we know what the rest of the world pays, but we are getting out and out f ucked by a hand full of greedy f ckers doesn’t cut it.
