anyone bored enough to talk to a 60 year old female .ive rented a campervan from calgary for 9 weeks to xplore the rockies .then im to buy a tent to camp on vancouver island for a couple of months .then im not sure what .i live on an island 30 miles by 13 miles ,canada is a little bigger anyone interested in passing on ideas etc .
visiting canada for 6 months ,any ideas helpfull

You seem to have the luxury of time, so I'd say, get there and start talking to people. You'll get loads of ideas, and likely have a blast getting some of the inside scoops. If I'd seen more of BC, I'd give you more advice. Alas, I've seen only the North East of it, where tourists aren't really inclined to go. lol.
thanks karie ,coming to the rockies to get away from people after 43 years in psychiatry but idea is sound.my country is 30 miles by 15 miles ,theres a little more space in canada to chill out alone .cant wait
I was in Campbell River on Vancouver Island in March of '07 and it was wonderful. I did some camping around Osoyos in the '80's...another great place. Fernie is nice, Golden, Banff, Jasper, Kamloops...all in the rockies.
When you're done with the west, head towards central Canada. Ontario is beautiful in the summertime. It gets a bit humid at times but that's good for your pores and sweats the toxins out of your body. And if you have some time left, take in the east coast. The hospitality and scenery down there is second to none. Newfoundland in particular will remind you of home.

don't listen to the others... they know nothing!;-) Take your camper, put a canoe on top and drive north through Wood Buffalo Park, even past Yellowknife, as far as the road will take you. Then put your canoe with tent into the water and just paddle along leisurely. Listen to the loons, watch moose feeding along the etches, spy an eagle in the sky, and if you are particularly lucky you'll see a real dancing loon! :lol:

I live on Vancouver Island, and it is wonderful, but I would wonder why you would switch
to a tent and not sleep in your camper van, with some outisde sitting area or ?.
Seems to me that would be more comfortable.
If you want space, why not try doing the whole country? Take that camper of yours and start driving. Saskatchewan has more space than you can shake a stick at. :lol:

You can't go wrong in the mountains. They are spectacular, emotionally powerful, overwhelming, and to somebody like me who's lived on the Canadian prairies all his life and grown accustomed to hundred kilometre vistas of flat land and huge skies, humbling. Your home is 30 by 15 kilometres? In Canada you can find many places where there's nobody but you for 100 kilometres in any direction, so if you want to escape from people, this is a good place to be. We have lots of space here. Welcome, and enjoy yourself.
But you really should see some of the great plains of North America too....

thanks mt,i would need a lifetime to see all in your beautifull (big) country i will do my best will check out the places you mentioned around vancouver and the rockies but i hadnt planned onthe east coast .may come back next year.will be back next winter to check out polar bears in churchill for 5 days,carol

You might want for company though at some point and I would point out that it can be dangerous to get too far gone all by yourself.
The bugs can get crazy here. Black Fly especially in the northern areas, so pick up some gear to help fend them off you. Have fun, welcome to Canada and take all the pictures you can.

well mmaybe bring someone who is a little slower than you, then all you have to do is outrun them.:lol:Just kidding - there are places here where no one has ever walked, I love BC it runs the gammit of habitats -coastal,subtropical,deserts,forests, and of course the rockies, but if your going to go into the wilderness sleep in your camper there is a lot of wild life, and the bears won't pass up a free lunch (your supplies not you)

I haven't been for years now, but if you head north at all, the black flies will feast on you. Mosquitos can get bad too in some places. You will want some repellant with "deet" in it to ward them off. Depending on how remote you are going to get, some bear repellant might come in handy. We've really encroached on bear territory and so more troublesome bears can tipa campsite loooking for food as they've lost their fear of humans. You probably won't run into one if you make some noise treking, though it would be best to have repellant and not need it than need it and not have it.
Lastly beware of the smooth talkers on the Island, they will love you and leave you. A bad lot those ones.

You can sleep in your camper van for the same price as you can in your tent, you have
to rent a spot in a r.v. park for both, same size. Tents are crazy, you must be familiar
with rain, where you're from, and it does same here, getting wet is getting cold.
