PASADENA, Calif. - There could be some discord during the Tournament of Roses Parade as demonstrators promise to raise issues during the holiday spectacle that has been going on for more than a century. Human rights advocates plan to protest a float honoring the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and anti-war activists, including "Peace Mom" Cindy Sheehan, intend to rally for peace. ...

Sheehan, the outspoken San Francisco Bay area activist whose son was killed in Iraq, is campaigning for Congress against Rep. Nancy Pelosi and calling for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. She will join other pro-impeachment and anti-war groups at the parade, according to her sister, Dede Miller.

As many as 1,000 supporters are expected to rally before and after the parade and distribute 20,000 pamphlets while flying 300 banners along the parade route, said Peter Thottam, executive director of the Los Angeles National Impeachment Center.

I'm sure the parade revelers will think "Hmm, yes, this is an appropriate venue for strident, in-your-face political cacophony. I'm so glad I brought the children."

The ability of liberals to continuously shoot themselves in the head never ceases to amaze me.

It's a good idea, it's already got you pissed off and it didn't happen yet, so much for the dumb protestors.Tactically it's sound. Historically it's entirely correct to take advantage of assembly. Legally it's within the rights of the protestors. By posting you already work for them by informing others of the issues, inadvertantly of course. While I can understand your disapproval, they are not simply dumb protestors, it's called active democracy. Get used to it.

Really, who cares? Nothing of substance will either be said or decided as a result of the protest. It'll be annoying, shrill, stupid, not based on facts and very likely fueled by hubris and hate.

And they'll be acting completely within their rights.

Just like Ann Coulter.

There's no such thing as "dumb protesters". Protesters and disenters are a key element in a democracy -- they represent the "other" view. If we lived in a society where only one view was allowed, we wouldn't be a democracy.

There are protesters that are right or wrong, but there are never dumb protesters.

Tell me again how protest dosn't work and I'll laugh and laugh and fall off my half finished case of beer. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, grandma knew that way long time ago. God helps them who helps thenselves etc. If you want to affect change protest is very cost-effective.If you got a burr under your saddle and sit arround on your arse waiting for the duely appointed authoritys to act you'll get very rusty and eventually fall apart. Assembly, dissent and protest are rights there exorcise is the finest example of grass roots democracy, period. Sheep are dumped on for a reason, it's because they'll stand arround shivering waiting to be fleeced because they're passive and stupid. Don't make me list the protests and revolutions that have made the difference in our lives,if they hadn't happened our children would still be working and dying in the mines for christ sake, the reason we're in a pickle right now is because of the passivity of citizenry these past thirty years since that archpeckerhead Reagan introduced deregulation and selfregulation well them days is over.

Let's say you're having sex and suddenly, some protester jumps into your bedroom, starts waving a sign and screaming "impeach Bush! Impeach Bush!"

Now, is the protester

A.) smart?
B.) dumb?

The protester is dumb for committing break and enter. The protest itself is probably not dumb. Just the act of break and enter. :p

"There could be some discord during the... Parade..."

But... maybe not.

The crowd will be larger. The colour commentary will be more colourful. A burning effigy of the nation's highest officer on the one hand, and on the other, a similar burning effigy.

Sure, it used to be about sports and civic pride, good weather, fresh air and fun. It will be interesting to see how the votors react to a candidate using the parade. How do you like the parade being used this way? My mind is quite made up and the protesters cause is lost. This is a desperate move for a desperate cause, or it's just poor style and bad taste.

If the crowd gets pissed off, they'll punch the protesters in the mouth for us. Over to you Bill, "A fight has broken out..."

You remind me of an old Black Sabbath tune... From Volume Four, if I'm not mistaken.

I suppose it was from Master of Reality... It's been a while since I've given Sabbath a listen...

"I think it was true it was people like you
That crucified Christ
I think it sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced
Will you be so sure when your day is near
Say you don't believe?
You had the chance but you turned it down
Now you can't retrieve."

But I'll toss in a little something from Volume Four for good measure:

"Well I don't want no Jesus freak to tell me what it's all about
No black magician telling me to get my soul out
Don't believe in violence, I don't even believe in peace
I've opened the door and my mind has been released

Well I don't want no preacher telling me about the god in the sky
No I don't want no one to tell me where I'm gonna go when I die
I wanna live my life with no people telling me what to do
I just believe in myself, 'cause no one else is true

Every day just comes and goes
Life is one big overdose
People try to ruin me
And I can't seem to eliminate them

People riding their real pace
Keep on running their rat race
The ante is risen once a week
In their world of make-believe

So believe what I tell you, it's the only way to fight in the end
Just believe in yourself, you know you really shouldn't have to pretend
don't let those empty people try and interfere with your mind
Just live your life and leave them all behind"

It will be interesting to note that the networks may not show any protest scenes, wouldn't want to upset their few remaining sponsers,eh? Ms. Sheehan is dangerously close to being shot down in the streets by some patriot.
