What a surprise if Canadians announced "screw the drama and get on with the business of governing" and elected NDP with a Green opposition....

Not likely but food for thought....

From what I hear, a good chunk of his party wants an election. Unfortunatly the reason they want it is so Dion will lose bad, quit and they can replace him with Micheal Ignatiac (like anybody in their right mind would vote for him).

With every confidence vote, Dion's position will get weaker and weaker both with Canadians and his own party.

Yea, it's not going to get any easier for Dion. I'm wondering what hes going to do with the upcoming confidence motions Harpers going to throw his way. I can see it ending with enough Liberals pressuring him to go for an election if hes allowing the Conservaties a pass to push through what they want. Yea Iggy is not exactly on my list of inspiring leaders, but compared to Dion...

I can't figure out who wouldn't want an election under the current circumstances but even more disturbing is the fact that some poll in past week or so showed that the electorate would hold the Liberals accountable for any non-confidence vote that forces an election. On the other hand maybe Canadians simply are completely unprincipled and do not give a sh!t so long as their daily lives are not affected.

"Canadians don't want Election right now..." Dion says [I saw it on CBC Politic news..I simply giggled at it].
I would love to send him a mail..saying..
"You mean...its you're party that's not ready? Please, clarify that please. 60~70% Canadians who actually VOTE...for whatever sake don't really know what's going on here."

Hehe, anyone seen that person behind Dion? I do not know many politicians but he made me laugh. His expression at Dion's ..er..."powerful remarks" was motionless and really unenthusiastic while the rest of party was taunting...and clapping..standing..bleh bleh..

It's mandatory in some countries, though I'm not sure how they deal with dissenters. Australia gets something like 95% with compulsory voting, Austria gets 92% without compulsory voting.

In Brasil you can't update your passport or other governmental paperwork unless you are up to date on your democratic responsibilities. Apparently it forces people to vote who don't really care, so recently a bunch of people decided if they were forced to vote that they would vote for the Brasilian equivalent of the Rhinoceros party. Three members or so were elected.

Its not criminal not to vote in Brasil, it just makes life inconvenient.

Regarding the throne speech, I was mostly impressed, although I noted a number of stumbling blocks. The crime bill will probably trigger an election unless they are so scared of losing; the crime bill is going to contain a ton of provisions which is just bad, there is no way to oppose one bad law without opposing all the new laws. Although the throne speech mentions the environment, it uses defeated language and an unrealistic time scale. Other than those, there are a few things I can get behind... as long as it is done more transparently than last session.

I'm against another 200 million wasted.
I'm against this politicle strategies that are so eveident that even the news tells you where its going that you don't have to figure it out.
Democracy only works when people apply themselves to support it and make their voices heard.
Tho the way our system is made its not hard to understand this 'couldn't careless' attitude.
If our system worked in a way the our voices was heard continuosly people would care.
I would like to see fixed time frame election(almost said fixed elections). While we are voting , vote on key issues too. Oh Hell get rid of all these political parties. No party debt, No party scandles, No political party stratigioes to sway votes. Just pure governing.

Oh well , not going to happen anytime soon.

The Conservative gov't has already passed a law setting fixed election dates......thus removing from Harper's hands the strategic advantage of disolving Parliament anytime it seems to be beneficial (remember Chretien and his 3 year majorities?) Thus the tactics used now.

I'll be voting CPC.
