Red-headed family forced to move after 'ginger' hate campaign

1st June 2007
Daily Mail

A family of red-heads say they have been hounded out of three homes by gingerist yobs.

Flame-haired couple Kevin and Barbara Chapman and each of their children sport fine heads of copper coloured hair.

But their crowning glory has led to a bizarre hate campaign that has seen them forced to flee across their home city of Newcastle.

Kevin and Barbara Chapman, pictured here with children Daniel and Ryelle, have been driven from their home

They have been forced to move house three times but at each new place they have had their windows smashed, offensive graffiti sprayed on their property, and the children have been physically attacked.

The kids endure daily taunts from yobs and only this week the slogan "ginger is gay" was daubed across the wall of their home.

Mr Chapman, 49, says the constant abuse has become so bad his 11-year-old son, also called Kevin, has tried to kill himself and is now taught at home, while 10-year-old daughter Ryelle, and sons Daniel, 10 and Jordan, 13, have all been badly affected.

The full-time dad said: "It started more than three years ago, when the kids started getting bullied by local lads over the colour of their hair.

"They've been punched and kicked and thrown over a hedge. Every time they go out these gangs have got to them.

"We can't even go to the local shops which are only two minutes away. The kids get all their stuff taken off them.

"The abuse we have to endure is just disgusting. I mean, having ginger hair, you expect people to have a bit of fun, but this is just unbelievable."

Graffiti scrawled on the Chapmans' front door

Last week Mr Chapman says Kevin was assaulted by a girl in the street, who punched him repeatedly, blacking his eye.

And on Wednesday, Mr Chapman returned from an appointment with social services to find his windows had been put through.

He says Kevin has attempted suicide.

"It's shocking, Kevin's never even seen a life yet and he's been driven to this," said Mr Chapman. It's lucky, people have been there to help him when it's happened, but one day I could be out of the house and who knows?"

The family moved from Walker to Newbiggin Hall to try to escape the prejudice, but they were forced to move again to Kenton Bar a year ago.

Mr Chapman added: "The first five weeks in Kenton Bar were great, but then we were spotted again.

There seem to be around 10 or 12 different families who have relations in the different areas."

The garden fence outside the family home has been scrawled with graffiti.

The children have had to change schools three times, from Wharrier St Primary in Walker, to Simonside Primary in Newbiggin Hall, and on to Kenton Bar Primary.

Ryelle said: "Every time we make new friends we end up just getting bullied, and it happens every time we leave the house." Daniel added: "We get bullied in every school, there's nothing we can do about it really."

Barbara said: "It's just not fair on the kids, for them to have to put up with this. It's every single day and the pressure is just building up and up."

Mr Chapman has reported a number of incidents to the police but says the people who harass them often include young children.

Kenton community Sgt Colin Murray said: "There have been a number of incidents reported at the family's address since December 2005.

"Each incident has been investigated and we continue to offer our support to the family. We will continue to monitor the situation."

Newcastle City Council said housing staff had been told by the family about the taunts and abuse they have suffered.

A spokesman added: "We are currently discussing their situation with him."

Michele Elliott of anti-bullying charity Kidscape, said: "What people do not realise is that this is a hate campaign. It is not just bullying."

K, is this story for real? Because if it is I might like to start a club. I'll call it "people against people who have moles on their left forearm" Cause we know how bad those people are.

Shut up, no we're not! My club, "People who have a mole on their left forearm against people against people who have a mole on their left forearm" will never stand for this!

Or sit.

Or anything - just you see!

haha, that sign is awesome. Don't want those Irish bastards drinking on the job. I guess that would exclude me though... :headbang:

That was a real sign. NINA signs were quite common until the middle of the last century.

Irish were considered a lesser race and not fit for employment. Until "White" became an established race replacing the many european ones. Irish were known as the blacks of europe for a reason.

That's photoshopped.

How do you know it isn't black marker? it could be photoshop, but so could the picture of the family too. The fading on the edges is consistent with a black marker (but again, you can photoshop anything)

It's photoshopped with out a doubt.
For you artistically challenged folks, one of the tells is the angle of the picture to the object is not 90 degrees, but the angle of the letters are at 90 degrees.
If it was actually written on the object, it would be at the same angle as the object, not the camera.

A second tell is focus, the letters are in focus while the object is slightly out of focus.

A third is contrast.

As fake as the 6 giant fire breathing water dragons of lake Ontario.

1.) the object could be at 90 degrees

2 and 3 are iffy, and not a matter of photoshop.. most pro applets cover that automatically (fixing focus, contrast and differences in resolution with a click of a button)

Teasing Gingers?

Ever since the southpark episode teasing Gingers has been the "in" thing. I always tease my wife and her family about being Gingers, being a lesser race of subhumans and whatnot.

If you wanna hear people torment Gingers go by a high school. I can fully believe some kids picking on a family of Gingers and just being jerks about it beyond being funny (you see it happen to overweight families all the time)

A friend of mine used to refer to red-haired folks as "orange people"- not in a bad way, just as a descriptor

And I just have to point out I can not BELIEVE that folks on here will argue with whatever I post on any topic, my initial comment in this thread was more sarcastic (I basically was saying "wow, how F-ing fake is this??" but of course I wasn't literal enough for many folks apparently) - the use of photoshop to make that image is totally obvious, but there's still gotta be folks who say "how can you say that for sure?"

Well, knowing how the program works and being fairly artistically inclined and super-intelligent, I can say without a doubt that it was done with either photoshop or something else for the reasons stated by unforgiven and others above

How such an obviously phoney story could actually have folks defending its veracity is funny beyond words- notice how certain folks saying "it can't be proved false" happen to the the very same folks saying that the US governments official version of the 9-11 thing can't be questioned??

How come a fairly observant person MUST accept the possibility that this stupid piece is true (when it obviously isn't) but when it comes to really big issues surrounded with questions, our minds are supposed to shut down, and there can be only one explanation, regardless of evidence or any other factors??

Odd how much insight a stupid little phoney "news item" can bring, but fascinating. I SHALL be using this thread in many, many arguments I do believe.

If you can't call shenanigans on something this obvious, everything is possible eh??
