Pedant ! :tongue3:not to put too fine a point on it, but both systems fail because not everyone CAN play by the same rules.

Speaking of being pedantic: Canada is not a socialist country, it is an oligarchy most of the time and a democracy part of the time with a few socialist policies.Canada is still a socialist country in certain ways, though some people are not willing to admit it.
And I never said, that working hard is the only way to the new better life, I only said, that socialism fooled a lot of people, because, as you know, it is very easy to get used to being lazy, and it is extremely hard to be adjusted to the system where you have to work to earn your living.Chukcha you sound like you know what you're talking about, I don't pretend that socialism is a cure for all human ailments but I do know that if our capitalist system is not modified by socialism we will destroy the planet and everything on it. I am not advocating a soviet style government, I'm advocating very basic human requirments. Working hard is not the end of human developement and it won't in many cases provide basic requirements.
PS I work harder than most capitalists I know, I do it because I love it, I also live hard.
All I have to say to you, if you believe that system will change the human beings, you're in the wrong path. Human beings should change regardless of any politics. You will be very disappointed, when you will find that those very socialists, who are now passing the so called "good" news, will turn out to be those very capitalists, that are striving to get reach, in different ways, glooming everyone with the thought that everyone is equal, but at the same time using the cheap labour and not caring about anyone at all but themselves.Canada is still a socialist country in certain ways, though some people are not willing to admit it. Yes our fine nation was cultivated on socialist soil. It's another secret that back in the 50's and 60's, people had a better standard of living than they do today, even on their meager salaries back then. More people could afford a house and new car, the majority with only one parent working. Today, poverty is actually on the rise in Canada and has been for the past 20 years or so. Child poverty as well.
Not only that, have you taken a look at the roads around your town lately? In many cities the infrastructure of Canada is falling into serious decay. Yet, we pay more taxes now than we ever did before, although we apparently dismantled many of the socialist institutions in this country, which should have cost more for the state to run. How is it that they were so prosperous in the 50's and 60's, along with having the best health care system in the world, during the so-called Golden Age of Socialism in Canada?
Because in capitalism, it's got to be profitable to get done at all. And there's no money to be made in fixing the roads. People won't do "maintenance" in general, unless their forced to do it. It costs money, and you don't get an immediate return. So without government intervention to place standards and enforce them, people won't abide by regulations, the quality of everything gets reduced to the lowest acceptable level (to increase the capitalist profit margin). You can't run a city like that.
But the United States has demonstrated a solution to this problem: Using free or ultra cheap labour provided by prisoners and illegal immigrants. A slave class of workers to support the consumer class.
The new word for the "common" shall be- Convict
Believe me, it's not the system, it's us human beings that need to be changed to become kinder, more tolerant, forgiving, acceptive, happy and loving. Socialism will only cause damage to all this.
Yet many still hold out that Cuba is some sort of beacon for socialism. If anything, it should be the opposite. It should be an example to hold out in front of socialists and ask if this is how you would like to see Canada one day.
And I never said, that working hard is the only way to the new better life, I only said, that socialism fooled a lot of people, because, as you know, it is very easy to get used to being lazy, and it is extremely hard to be adjusted to the system where you have to work to earn your living.
And I am not saying, that capitalism is the way to go either, all I am trying to bring across is that I don't see cure in socialism at all.
Well I can't disagree with that, except the socialism part. ;-)
I hope thats the lesson people will get out of these recent tragic events, imagine if this tragedy ws what it takes to wake up the American public. They and we in Canada need to question our values and lifestyle, whether we have gone too far with liberal media and the urban rat-race, and ignore raising kids to be normal healthy human beings. That's the real meaning of prosperity, shall we say the most important "ism" is human-ism!
No matter which "ism" we adapt there are always greedy selfish people who infiltrate and corrupt the system. Which is why -dare I mention- Karl Marx proposed the need for constant revolution every 20 years. Not that I condone his solution because it implies we will always have rebelllion and violence.
People will never learn the lesson, you will find that everything is controlled by the money, even if we have socialism, people will still want to get rich. They will be thinking of how to get best education for their kids, best health care, nice house, fancy car and clothes, as it makes us live more comfortable having all this, especially knowing that John and Marcy next door have it all.Well I can't disagree with that, except the socialism part. ;-)

Revolutions are not primarily concerned with violence but with change.
Like Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Bora Bora, Costa Rica, Molokai in Hawaii, etc. lol. Yup. Sure.......If it wern't for socialism Cubans would not be alive today, they'd long ago have been swallowed and the whole island paved with resorts and casinos interspersed with vast ghettos.
Betcha Castro gets better healthcare than any of his people. Betcha Hu Jintao isn't surviving on a bowl of rice and some salt & pepper soup per day.
