Experts fear the countries will develop a bomb

Six Arab states have announced they are embarking on programmes to master atomic technology, sparking fears of a nuclear race.

The Times said the move, which followed the West's failure to curb Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, could see the rapid spread of nuclear reactors in one of the world’s most unstable regions.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) named the countries involved as Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. Tunisia and the UAE had also shown interest.

The group wanted to build civilian nuclear energy programmes, as they were permitted to under international law. However, there were fears a bomb would eventually be made.

"Some Middle East states, including Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Saudi Arabia, have shown initial interest [in using] nuclear power primarily for desalination purposes," Tomihiro Taniguch, the deputy director-general of the IAEA, told the business weekly Middle East Economic Digest.

He said that they had held preliminary discussions with the governments and that the IAEA’s technical advisory programme would be offered to them to help with studies into creating power plants.

Mark Fitzpatrick, an expert on nuclear proliferation at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told The Times that it was clear that the sudden drive for nuclear expertise was to provide the Arabs with a "security hedge".

"If Iran was not on the path to a nuclear weapons capability you would probably not see this sudden rush [in the Arab world]," he said.

Until recently Arab countries had been pushing for a nuclear free Middle East, where only Israel has nuclear weapons.

The middle east oil wealthy countries are not seeking to produce domestic use nuclear energy.

Anyone who believes it cares nothing for democracy.

It is more than a bit hypocritical to call for a nuclear free Middle East, except for Israel. We have to get rid of all the nuclear weapons, including Israel's. I know it'll never happen.

of course cortex,

it should come full circle with man becoming as tribalistic and fearful of outsiders as he was 100000 years ago, only now with more people and more efficient ways of killing.

The higher the order of complexity of the animal, the slower evolution occurs within that animal.

I beg to slightly differ. It comes around however the trajectory is a spiral, not a circle. Coming around means having made an orbit spaning 10,000 years--I would say from neolithic man to atomic age. In that orbit can reflect on our awakening as a being that desperately wants to live--because we are solely capable of knowing the inevitability of our own death and at the same time we have acquired the ultimate tool of death and suicide. We can understand that our level it is as Ive said a balance that is required or else abuses will occur. I suppose the program that is unconsciously generating this in my head is the idea that we havent yet reached an equilibrium with our natural and social environment and that a pure balance of power just has to be a factor in that. And that the machine that may help us to achieve that may be the bomb. In lieu of the fear of god a more concrete fear is required. The nuclear solution can bring a nebulous paranoid and unfocused fear of death and transmute it into a focused concrete manifestation of potential instant annihilation. Something we can work with. I really think it will succeed.

The speed of neuronal evolution is now a billion times faster than genetic evolution. The hardware is basically the same but the software is upgraded every few 10 years or so--It those damn viruses, not the least of which is language itself that we have to watch out for.

If every Nation is armed with nuclear weapons, how long before someones fingure slips?

I suppose my sarcasm fell on deaf ears. Either that or it's just plain hard to be sarcastic online.

In any event, you are correct. Obtaining nuclear weapons serves the purpose of being a member of the bigger dick club and nothing more. The unfortunate side effect is the probability of an accident increases exponentially. There were many "near" accidents during the cold war than actual strategic intent for nuclear arms deployment.

All countries should get rid of their nuclear weapons, and all countries should ensure nobody obtains them.

If anything ever goes wrong, it won't be a nuclear war, it will be a nuclear holocaust. In today's day and age, the true enemy of nuclear war is war itself.

Oh I got your sarcasm.

I'm glad i got my point out clearly, I didn't have much coffee in me when I wrote that.

So what is the next natural step?

As more and more Nations strive to join the "Bigger dick club" (Great name BTW), the problem grows beyond the control of pacts and treaties. So what then? Do we wait for nuclear winter to fall, before we come up with a solution or do we just say, "wow, we should not do that agian" while reading Tom Clany at night in the glow off our children?
