British Army - the best in the world.

A British Army sniper, known only as The Man Who Never Misses, has killed 39 Taliban single-handedly - 5% of the 700 Taliban killed by the British Army so far.

All 38 infantry battalions of the British Army will be required to have an 18-man platoon of sharpshooters by 2008.

A BRITISH sniper waging war on the Taliban is so deadly he has earned a chilling nickname — The Man Who Never Misses.

The unerring Army sharpshooter has killed 39 rebel fighters single-handedly.

His marksmanship is so lethal that rumours have spread like wildfire through insurgents’ camps, causing panic and confusion.

The sniper — who The Sun is not naming to prevent him becoming a target himself — is a member of elite 3 Para.

Described by sources as “the best shot in the Army” he is responsible for over five per cent of the 700 insurgents killed by Paras since British forces returned to Afghanistan.

He is based in the wild Helmand province, where our troops launched a massive assault on the Taliban this week.

A source said yesterday: “This sniper is truly something else — a silent assassin.

“In the deadly terrain of southern Afghanistan, where guerilla warfare rules, he has been invaluable. The rumours are sweeping enemy camps that he is the man who never misses.”

The sniper’s actual toll is probably higher than 39 but the Taliban’s tendency to reclaim bodies makes deaths difficult to confirm.

His lethal L96A1 rifle has a range of 1,000 yards and is fitted with electronic sights and laser range-finders.

He works with a partner called a spotter, who locates the target and helps judge wind speed and distance so the bullet travels accurately.

Each day the pair risk their lives away from fellow Paras, taking up covert positions and often lying hidden for as long as ten hours at a time. Once the shot has been fired they need nerves of steel to stay concealed while Taliban rebels wielding rocket-propelled grenades and machine-guns desperately try to hunt them down.

The Ministry of Defence would not discuss the crackshot for security reasons.

But he is regarded as one of the most successful British snipers since World War Two.

Earlier this year it was revealed that the Army is creating an elite force of almost 700 snipers, with all 38 infantry battalions required to have an 18-man platoon of sharpshooters by 2008. It will be the first time formal sniper platoons will have existed since the end of the First World War in 1918.

The decision follows the success of British and US sniper teams who have killed dozens of terrorists on recent operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In 2003 Royal Marines sniper Corporal Matt Hughes killed an Iraqi gunman from 900 yards with a “wonder shot” in which he aimed 56ft to the left and 35ft high to allow for wind.

The bullet’s trajectory was calculated by his spotter after he studied the movement of dust in the breeze. And Irish Guards Sergeant Eddie Waring lay on a roof for hours to take out three Iraqis who were laying mines in Basra.

Ah, Blackleaf, mere beginners you Brits in the sniping world.

A Canadian sniper killed a Taliban at the incredible range of 2430 meters.......that's right, two and one-half kilometers. This is by far the longest shot ever made by a sniper.

The Canadians work in three man teams and use MacMillan .50 BMG rifles, many times more powerful than the Brit 7.62s.

is there a gun that can shoot to that far? ... and kill someone?

Yeah

A .50 caliber rifle fires a 750 grain bullet (thats about 1 and 3/4 ounces) at over 3 and 1/2x the speed of sound. The rifles are very heavy, to soak up some of the recoil. Even at that, a Canuck sniper was asked what it was like to fire one......he said "Put on a hockey helmet and get your buddy to smack you in the head with a baseball bat" :D Probably an exageration, but....

For comparison, a 7.62 NATO (.308 Winchester, a good deer rifle) fires a 147 grain bullet at about 2700 fps, or 2 and 1/2 times the speed of sound.

With laser range finders and specialty optics, shots can be made at incredible range...

The sniper that made the 2430 meter shot said he missed the first time, but the guy was so far away he didn't know he was being fired at.....

It is wind drift of the bullet that is so hard to figure........I read once the guy that won the 1000 meter Bisley shoot was shooting seven feet to one side of his target, on a relatively calm day.

These snipers are amazing!

I read the story of the canadian sniper also. I think it may have been in Maclean's or western standard. The point of the story was that even though we have one of the best shots ever,he will not be appreciated because we are a "peacekeeping nation" and killing is bad, even in war.

The British are indeed impressive marksmans. I was particularly impressed with the way they were able to kill that innocent Brazilian man a fews days after the London bombings--what--- got him 3 times in the head at point black range by one of them while the other Brit held him down--all right on target!--Phucking bozos!

I watched a documentary today on the History Channel regarding snipers. According to the documentary, the Brits are by far the best snipers in the world.

Hmmmmm, I wonder where that documentary was made.

The Brits certainly are good at it, and they would have many times the number of snipers the Canadians do, but......

2430 meters.

The Brits simply couldn't do that, as they are not using equipment capable of that kind of range.

Hah,I propose a contest. Let's all throw in a buck or two and see who is the better shot. First country to hit 20 Taliban wins.

I'm pretty sure it was American Colpy. It was a rather interesting documentary. Apparently there was this Russian sniper by the name ofVasily Zeitzev(sp?). The guy had over 300 kills in a month or something to that effect. He was so good, the Germans dispatched their best sniper in a hunt to kill him, so Zeitsev went on the offensive and tried to hunt down the German sniper.

Anyway, I have heard of the Canadian record. I suppose the Brits can simply have the fame being they have a long history of it.

Vasily shot 454 Germans, all officers. His girlfriend killed over 200. In 6 months of fighting in Stalingrad.

See the movie "Enemy at the Gates" for an interesting look at Vasily, although they took some liberties.......when he finally killed the German marksman, the guy was over 600 yards away.

Snipers

Colpy:

I have a friend who used to revel in sniping groundhogs when we were in our 20's. He would crawl to the top of a small rise and takem out with a .222 . Would spend an hour or so getting into position. He was pretty good actually.

After a good hunt on one particular day in late spring, he had to resolve himself to being layered with calamine lotion for about a month, as he had crawled through a big patch of poison ivy. He was super-allergic to it. After this deal, he would get it every year just by walking by a patch on a humid day. So ended his dreams of military glory in the "sniper patch"

Have to admit, I saw the irony and humour in this.........AKA.......I laughed till I was almost sick.

Still gotta chuckle. So do the groundhogs.

Ugg.

I still prefer the C3A1. If you have ever tried to move quickly with either the PH or the Mac, you'ld know why.

It still is, as you said, a superior weapon, mobility really isn't an issue when your in the next county while aquiring.LOL

U wanna be sure of ur facts before u start mouthing off about stuff like this....
The issue was not whether he was shot or not, it was the fact that intel and the surveillance people got it wrong. They gave this info out and the Police officers acted on the orders they were given u dick. If u wanna call someone a bozo direct it at those that fed the info......or look in the mirror at the knob who dont know what he's talkin about!!
