Since U.S. President Donald Trump insists that Lake Ontario is now renamed Lake America, a Sault Ste. Marie lawyer suggests renaming a lake in Northern Ontario that bears the American leader’s namesake.


In a viral post on Facebook, Lawyer Jeff Broadbent of Broadbent Law offered a number of humourous options for what to name Trump Lake following Trump’s Oval Office announcement.

“Trump issued a meaningless order renaming of Lake Ontario to Lake America,” said the post.

“In Northern Ontario we have what is currently named Trump Lake. We think it should be renamed and invite suggestions,” the post continued. “For instance, we like ‘Little Dictator Lake’, ‘Crooked Lake’, ‘Felon Lake’, ‘Ego Lake’, or ‘Grifter Lake’ amongst others. What are your suggestions?”

Lawyer calls renaming ‘offensive’ and ‘meaningless’
In an interview with Soo Today, Broadbent said the funny post was the brainchild of “me and our team.”

“These are difficult times,” said Broadbent. “Like most people, I find myself getting worked into a knot about the stress Trump is causing.”


“It’s offensive and it’s meaningless. He has no authority to change the name of the lake. We can choose to react as he wants or we can embrace it and laugh at it for what it is.”

Broadbent added it’s “healthier to find the humour in it.”

Trump Lake is a small body of water located north of the township of Chapleau in northeastern Ontario. Broadbent said the water isn’t great for fishing, so it’s true to its name.

While the viral post is meant to be funny, he said the world still needs to take Trump seriously.

“I think (Prime Minister Mark) Carney is right that our world has changed. It’s very clear to me that Trump admires dictators,” Broadbent told the outlet. “I think we have to be mindful of that. We need to laugh a bit but take this dangerous person seriously.”

On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” seemingly a childish response to Ontario Premier Doug Ford calling out the president after Canada shut down trade talks with the U.S.


Carney has dismissed Trump’s effort to change the name.

“The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means ‘the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,'” said Carney, who noted the lake’s name is over 400 years old, which predates both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

“We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms. Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario — then, now and always,” he added.

We shouldn’t reduce ourselves to Trumps pettiness. If Democrats flip Republican-held seats in Ohio and Iowa while retaining Michigan, they will almost certainly net the four seats total needed to take control of the Senate for President Donald Trump’s final two years. Combined with other competitive target opportunities on the map (like Maine or North Carolina), securing these Midwestern states puts them at the threshold or total net gain of four needed for an outright majority.

The triple-whammy of tariffs, expensive diesel and fertilizer and now imported beef has created a crisis for agriculture-state Republicans. Let’s not give Trump a reason for these swing states to have empathy/sympathy for him, and perhaps Congress & the Senate can reel in some of the outlandish stupidity he’s inflicting on every direction including ours.

USMCA/CUSMA/T-MEC/etc…if the Republicans lose the house and senate, would (or at least should) significantly constrain President Donald Trump’s ability to wage a unilateral trade war against Canada and dictate the terms of the ongoing USMCA review. Getting into the sandbox and playing stupid renaming games on Trump‘s level wouldn’t help us to say the least. We (Canadians) need to appear to be the adults in the room with respect to trade negotiations.



The midterm elections might force some Americans that only listened to headlines to actually become informed before they cast their ballot. Let’s not feed into it with petty name changes of our own.

After years of advocacy by scientists, environmentalists, and local tribes, the name was officially approved by geographic boards on both sides of the border. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names approved it in November 2009, and then the Geographical Names Board of Canada followed with formal adoption in complete alignment by 2010.

I’m not sure what your point is here, but the Salish Sea is a marginal inland sea of the Pacific Ocean located in the Pacific Northwest, straddling the international border between the Canadian province of British Columbia and the U.S. state of Washington.

I don’t know , nuclear submarines , oil tankers , container shipping and cruise ships all traverse these waters , One would think this is fairly substantial .

That’s your opinion, versus the actual definition of what a marginal sea is. Nuclear submarines, oil tankers, container shipping and cruise ships all traversing the Salish Sea does not change it’s geography. I’m still not sure where you’re going with bringing up the Salish Sea in the first place here.

I’ve been to (through as a stop over) Toronto, but I’ve never left the airport, so I’ve never heard of this before so I googled it. Doesn’t sound like ‘Canada’ (the country) changed the name of this hotel, but an entity by the name of InnVest Hotels (or maybe it was done by JCF Capital?).

The building went through financial struggles, receivership, and legal battles. New owner JCF Capital ULC bought the property and reached a multi-million-dollar buyout agreement with the Trump Organization to end its management contract and licensing.

Donald Trump’s political career and controversial statements made the branding unpopular. The tower became a frequent site for protests by those not knowing that Trump never owned it, but the Trump Organization had licensed his name to the building and also operated it.

The negative public association harmed business demand. Dropping the name allowed the new Canadian owner, InnVest Hotels, to renovate the property and partner with Marriott International to launch a high-end luxury identity.

Between the names Trump International Hotel and St Regis Toronto Tower, it was also named the Adelaide Hotel Toronto.
