…that the U.S. considered the war with Iran "
terminated" due to a ceasefire (A
ceasefire does not mean the war is over. It is a temporary pause in fighting, not a permanent end to the conflict) that began on April 7, 2026, though a naval blockade and tensions remained.
Despite claiming the war "
terminated," the administration warned that renewed military action against Iran “remained possible” if Iran "misbehaves".

Terminated means the end of a relationship, project, or process. It is generally final, permanent, and implies that the action will not resume, where as Paused means a temporary interruption. It implies an intention to resume or continue at a later time, so is the war (which may or may not be a war) “
Terminated” or “Paused”???

It’s over right? The U.S. legal position argued that the conflict was part of an ongoing, long-term war, rather than a new war starting in 2026, citing previous incidents over several decades, such as the 1979 hostage crisis and the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing.

President
Donald Trump said on Saturday that he was reviewing a new
Iranian proposal to end the war (that is both over, and not over) but also expressed doubt it would lead to a deal…since both sides have already won…decisively.
Iran’s 14-point proposal calls for an end to the war

, rather than just an extension of the truce. The proposal, a rebuttal to the U.S. nine-point plan, also calls for the U.S. lifting sanctions on Iran, ending the naval blockade,
withdrawing forces from the region, and ceasing all hostilities, including Israel’s operations in Lebanon, according to the semiofficial Nour News agency, which has close ties to the country’s security organizations.
Iran's demands for the U.S. to remove "
all forces from the region" generally encompass a complete withdrawal of both naval assets (like carrier strike groups) and personnel from military bases in surrounding countries.
The U.S. president also offered a
new plan to reopen the
Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, and Iran stands firm on Strait of Hormuz issues, so…yeah. Iran’s deputy parliament speaker (Ali Nikzad) said on Sunday that Iran “will not back down from our position on the Strait of Hormuz, and it will not return to its prewar conditions.” Nikzad reiterated Iran’s position that any ships not associated with the U.S. or Israel will be able to pass after paying a toll.
The U.S. has warned shipping companies they could face sanctions for paying Iran in any form, including digital assets, to pass safely. Damned if ya do, & damned if ya don’t.

An Iranian proposal so far rejected by U.S.
President Donald Trump would open shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and end the U.S. blockade of Iran while leaving talks on Iran's nuclear programme for later, a senior Iranian official said on Saturday.
Trump said on Friday he was
"not satisfied" with Iran's latest proposal, without spelling out in detail which elements he opposes. "They're asking for things that I can't agree to," he told reporters at the White House, and Iran says, “Ditto!” in Farsi.

So…would this be a ‘new’ war (?) or a continuation of the war that started 02/28/2026 or in 1979 or would this be a separate yet distinct chapter in the war (that may or not be a war) as far as Congressional approval goes?
