Carney continues the long Liberal tradition of not forgetting how important votes from the Ukrainian community have been over the decades.

Freeland leaving cabinet for Ukraine envoy position: sources
Toronto MP is currently Transport minister

Longtime Liberal Chrystia Freeland is stepping down from cabinet, sources tell CBC News.

Those sources, who spoke on the condition they not be named, said the Transport minister is taking up an envoy role related to Ukraine.

The Toronto MP could make the official announcement as early as Tuesday, they said.

The news was first reported by the Globe and Mail.

Freeland has held prominent front bench roles since the party swept into power in 2015, and was long seen as former prime minister Justin Trudeau's lieutenant.

She sent shock waves through Ottawa when she abruptly resigned as finance minister in December, just hours before she was set to table the fall economic statement.

At the time, she called out her own government's economic stewardship and "costly political gimmicks."

Her exit escalated caucus pressure on Trudeau to resign, triggering a leadership race that she ran in, but that ultimately made Mark Carney leader. The Liberals would go from 20 points behind the Conservatives to a comeback win in April's election.

Freeland has had a role guiding Canada's diplomatic posture, as both international trade and foreign affairs minister. She helped lead Canada's negotiating team during U.S. President Trump's first term in office, landing what is now known as the CUSMA trade deal.

#415 here too:
???She abruptly resigned in December on the day she was supposed to deliver the 2024 fall economic statement, immediately before she was supposed to deliver the report, etc…???
“(T)here seems to be some confusion among the Conservative MPs about what is provincial jurisdiction and what is federal jurisdiction … the federal government has no authority over BC Ferries,” said Freeland. But internal communications published on Monday show that, while Freeland was publicly distancing her government from the B.C. shipbuilding deal, senior Liberal aides were brainstorming ways to obscure its connection to a looming federal financing announcement, etc…

12 years later she's a millionaire. 90% of the time she was in over her head in whatever she was doing.

And really can't imagine her having any insight into Ukraine that has not already come forward.

A good plan would be for all Federal pensions and benefits to terminate at the age of 71 and then have those affected people partake in the same pension all other Canadians receive. They all end up with far too much money for their many years of sucking on the public teat.

Found the answer myself. She’s going to be the special envoy to the Ukraine for Canada. Have we had one in the last three years that they’ve been at war?
With Freeland’s resignation, Carney has offered her the position of being Canada’s special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

It’s not clear what that entails, given Canada already has an energetic ambassador in Kyiv in Natalka Cmoc?

Freeland’s knowledge of, and commitment to, Ukraine is not in doubt and perhaps maybe she will carve out a meaningful role once peace finally comes?

As finance minister, Freeland never hit a target she imposed on herself, from falling debt-to-GDP levels to limiting the deficit to $40 billion.

It was only at the 11th hour that she broke with Trudeau’s profligacy, reversing the decision to spend billions on “costly political gimmicks” like the two-month GST holiday and the $250 rebate cheques for 19-million households.

Her act of rebellion brought down a prime minister and paved the way for Carney’s accession.

He should be grateful for that. But he should also thank the minister most closely associated with Trudeau’s utopian crusade to change the world in his own progressive image for signalling her intent to move on from frontline politics.
