From Watergate to Qatargate: Following the money to Benjamin 'not a crook' Netanyahu

Not only do 'Qatargate' and 'Watergate' rhyme, but the unfolding Israeli affair has numerous echoes of the original for those of us old enough to remember it. There is one clear difference between the two scandals, though

אליסון קפלן סומר Allison Kaplan Sommer

Did you hear the one about the prime minister whose criminal corruption trial was interrupted so he could be summoned for questioning by police in an even more serious criminal case?

Even the most imaginative scriptwriter would be challenged to conceive of an episode matching the pace of the dramatic events that unfolded in Israel on Monday.

In the morning, Benjamin Netanyahu arrived at Tel Aviv District Court for ongoing testimony in his trial, taking the stand to defend himself against charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. He was meant to have an especially long day of testimony to compensate for frequent cancellations due to national security matters.

But it turned out to be unusually short. Mid-testimony, the news broke that two of his aides, Eli Feldstein and Yonatan Urich, had been arrested on suspicion of contact with a foreign agent, accepting bribes, fraud, breach of trust and money laundering in the unfolding affair known as "Qatargate."

Shortly after came the even more dramatic news: Netanyahu had been summoned to testify in the Qatargate case in his Jerusalem offices. His court testimony in Tel Aviv was cut short and he was whisked away.

Ever since the Watergate scandal that brought down Richard Nixon – the president who insisted till the end that he was "not a crook" – the suffix "-gate" has been attached to countless instances of corruption around the world.

In this case, not only do "Qatargate" and "Watergate" rhyme, but the unfolding Israeli affair has numerous echoes of the original for those of us old enough to remember it. In this case, the money is being followed from Qatar to the pockets of – to paraphrase Watergate journalists Woodward and Bernstein – all the prime minister's men.

In this case, though, we aren't talking about funds used to wiretap, sabotage and play dirty tricks on political rivals. The Watergate crimes were child's play compared to the implications of the alleged wrongdoing in "Qatargate": advisers in the highest echelons of power receiving money from a hostile state funding Israel's deadliest enemy. The issue isn't only criminality and interference with an election; it is a potential betrayal of national security.

Then there's the effort to broadside law enforcement's pursuit of the matter. In Nixon's infamous Saturday Night Massacre, the president worked to sabotage the case building against his office by dismissing a special prosecutor. This led to the resignation of both the U.S. attorney general and his deputy.

Netanyahu and his allies have spent weeks focused on firing those heading the agencies investigating Qatargate: Shin Bet security service chief Ronen Bar and Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara.

As if all of this wasn't dramatic enough – even more than the disorder and heartbreak of the Vietnam War set the backdrop for Watergate, the endless Gaza war and horrifying plight of Israel's hostages feeds into the outrage over Qatargate.

As we await the results of Netanyahu's police interrogation on the matter, the central question is precisely the same as the one that worried 1970s Americans regarding Nixon: How much did the most powerful leader in the land know about what the men close to him were up to? And if he knew, when did he know?

There are, of course, no good answers to these questions at this time. In the best case scenario, willful ignorance that his top aides were allegedly on Qatar's payroll points to dangerous incompetence.

But the worst case scenario would be far more dangerous: A prime minister with direct knowledge of – or, heaven forbid – direct involvement in foreign interference in the innermost workings of his office.

There is one clear difference between the two scandals, though. Nixon resigned in August 1974 immediately after three top Republican congressional leaders told him that support for him had crumbled in the party and he would not survive an impeachment process. The likelihood of this scene playing out in today's Israel is nonexistent. The leaders of Netanyahu's Likud party are far too cowardly to have such a conversation and, judging from past behavior, Israel's prime minister would never step down of his own accord. He will fight on till the bitter end.

D’oh!
🤔Hamas has previously claimed that 70% of casualties have been women and children, a claim no longer reflected in their recently updated lists, according to the research. Approximately 72% of fatalities between the ages of 13-55 are men - the demographic category aligns with Hamas combatants.😯.

If they’re admitting to 72% now…I wonder what the real numbers are? Where there’s smoke, there’s memes that are almost as old as this latest goat rodeo.

Ironically, the memes (some of them) were more accurate than the media though.

It's all civilians.

What defines being urban?
To qualify as an urban area, the territory identified according to criteria must encompass at least 2,000 housing units or have a population of at least 5,000.

We're residents of Mariupol used by Ukraine as human shields. Yes? No? It's black and white. There is no gray. Zero.

So…by that logic, when Germany invaded Poland…& you see where I’m going here?…and they entered Warsaw let’s say…did those German soldiers instantly become civilians?

When the IDF after Oct 7th went into Gaza, did they become civilians? When Hamas (& Friends) invaded Israel Oct 7th, attacking smaller centres in rural areas, were they something other than civilians until they got back to Gaza that morning with their hostages?

We aren't talking Germany and Poland. That's 300 years ago. Let's stick to this decade.

Was/is Ukraine using civilians in Mariupol as human shields? Yes or no? In Kherson? Kharkov?

Ottawa Hamas cosplayers spark concern from mayor's office
But Ottawa Police maintain there is nothing wrong with anti-Israel marchers wearing Hamas-inspired uniforms

OTTAWA — While anti-Israel marchers in Ottawa wearing Hamas-inspired costumes prompted concern from the city’s mayor’s office, Ottawa police maintain the activists did nothing wrong.

Footage of a March 29 anti-Israel protest in downtown Ottawa depicted marchers dressed in black, wearing black balaclavas and green headbands associated with members of Palestinian terror group Hamas — a proscribed terrorist entity under Canadian law.

Video posted over the weekend by Ottawa-based citizen journalists Chris Dacey and C-Squared depicted one of the activists, goading and taunting those calling him out for his attire.

“Nice headband,” one videographer called out to the activist.

“Yeah, I like it too,” he replied.

Other videos from the protest showed other marchers in similar attire.

A statement to the Toronto Sun from the office of Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe expressed shock over the video.

“I am very concerned and disturbed to see symbols of terrorism on display on the streets of Ottawa,” he wrote. “Everyone respects the right to a peaceful protest, but the glorification of terrorism causes alarm for residents and has no place in our city.”

Sutcliffe promised to follow-up with Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs and Ottawa Police Services Board Chair Salim Fakirani.

However, a statement from Ottawa Police found little wrong with the activists’ attire.

“The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) received information that an individual was seen with clothing that could be associated to a terrorist entity at a demonstration on Saturday, March 29,” the statement read.

“Upon further investigation it was determined that there is no links to a terrorist/hate group. The OPS will continue to observe and monitor any and all behaviour during demonstrations.”

But security expert Casey Babb believes the response from Ottawa Police aligns with tactics used by terrorist sympathizers to get away with attending rallies wearing provocative and borderline-illegal clothing.

“These protestors — if that’s what we want to call them — write innocuous things in Arabic on signs, shirts, and green bandanas, and then feign outrage when they’re called out for hateful activities or inciting violence,” said Babb, a senior Macdonald-Laurier Institute fellow and advisor to Secure Canada.

“They get to intimidate Jews and innocent Canadians while claiming they’ve done nothing wrong.”

Green headbands worn by Hamas terrorists typically have Hamas symbols and Arabic printed upon them in white.

Last April, a UK judge ruled that Khaled Hajsaad, 24, broke the law by wearing a similar Hamas-style green headband — despite telling police the Arabic written on his headband was a statement of his Saudi heritage.

“Hamas is the most notable Palestinian group associated with the colour green,” City of London Magistrates’ Court Judge Nina Tempia wrote in her judgement. “He was wearing the headband at the pro-Palestinian march, where there would be no reasons for someone to wear the headband of a Saudi flag.”

Meanwhile, Babb said it’s time for police to start enforcing the law.

“We’ve got to stop with the selective outrage and the selective application of our laws,” Babb said. “It’s going to get people killed.”

Ottawa man found guilty on terror, hate charges related to neo-Nazi propaganda

OTTAWA — A Superior Court judge has found Ottawa-area graphic designer Patrick Macdonald guilty on three counts of terror and hate-related charges related to the production of antisemitic propaganda for the neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen Division.

Superior Court Justice Robert Smith found Macdonald guilty this week on all the charges he faced: participating in the activities of a known terror group, facilitating terrorist activity through the production of propaganda films, and promoting hate speech.

Smith wrote in his decision that Macdonald had “participated in producing” the videos and had “published images which wilfully promoted hatred against an identifiable group, namely Jewish people.”

Crown prosecutors alleged Macdonald, 27, used his skills in the production of several hateful videos and Nazi-inspired imagery, and linked him to the content and filming times and locations through metadata extracted from confiscated multimedia equipment, his telephone and bank records, and other items seized from his home.

Macdonald pleaded not guilty to all three charges. His defence attorneys argued the evidence was circumstantial and did not connect him to the political recruitment videos for what is now a defunct hate group.

The RCMP has called it the first case in Canada involving both terrorism and hate propaganda charges laid against someone accused of promoting a violent, far-right ideology.

Crown prosecutors had alleged Macdonald took part in the activities of the terror group from April 2018 to December 2019, in Quebec and Ontario, during the filming of the videos.

That was before the federal government officially declared the group a terrorist entity, but the judge independently determined that it was a terror group at that time based on expert testimony _ which the defence sought to have thrown out.

The videos, which were posted on the social media app Telegram on a public channel called “Terrorwave Refined,” contained violent and antisemitic messages and Nazi swastikas. They showed a small paramilitary force donning army fatigues and skull masks, shooting what appear to be automatic rifles, and burning flags and books.

An RCMP video analyst testified that there could have been eight to 25 individuals in the videos.

Set to ominous music and narrated by a digitally altered voice, the videos issued intimidating messages such as “purge the weak” and “burn, purge and start the revolution,” and threatened violence against Jewish people and bureaucrats.

The case followed a 2021 Vice Media article that identified Macdonald through confidential sources as the online social media poster going by the “Dark Foreigner” username.

Atomwaffen is known as an “accelerationist” group. Such groups seek to push society toward social collapse and then replace the government with fascism.

Over the course of the months-long trial, which was largely technical in nature, the prosecution said police found a draft letter signed by Macdonald on his desk written to the federal government protesting his travel being restricted.

In the document, submitted as court evidence, he confirmed his identity as the prolific social media poster known as “Dark Foreigner” and states that he became aware of the government travel restriction when he was blocked from travelling to Kyiv, Ukraine.

He argues in the document that his designs — which included masked individuals, blood spatter and neo-Nazi symbols — did not line up with his political views and that it should count as a form of artistic discretion under his Charter right of freedom of expression.

The court also heard police had found various objects inside his office ceiling, including an Atomwaffen pamphlet in Russian and a document that contained logins for various social media platforms that used the “Dark Foreigner” alias.

Justice Smith pointed to this in his decision, saying that hiding these items indicated he knew that the group’s activities were unlawful.

“I am satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused knew that (Atomwaffen Division) was a terrorist group that advocated for the use of violence against various minorities to provoke a race war to create a Nazi socialist white ethno-state,” he wrote.

A sentencing date has not yet been set and may not happen until the summer, but the Crown is seeking to have his bail revoked and a hearing is set for April 22.

With his campaign tanking, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is signing off on the old maxim that sex sells.

So, meet OnlyFans porn star Jessica Wetz.

Donning a keffiyeh, the Vancouver-based “content creator” hopped aboard Canada’s Socialist-in-Chief’s campaign bus. On a TikTok video, Wetz lays out the plan as Singh waves.

On her OnlyFans page, Wetz writes: “Hot and wild pics and vids 😈 Unreleased images, uncensored/explicit PPV content, funny videos, we’ve got it all here folks! Thank f–king god my nipples can be freeeee! I mean… OF doesn’t allow them outdoors… but freeish you know.”

Then she threatens to sue anyone who uses her pictures and signs off with “XXOO love you.”

In a video posted to TikTok from the campaign trail with Singh, Wetz pulls out all the stops on the left wing tropes.

She says to the camera: “As Canadians, we’re proud the American military does not get to decide what goes on inside our borders. Palestinians deserve the exact same thing, and I know you feel similar.”

Singh responds: “Absolutely. We should not be buying and selling with a country … especially with Netanyahu … that violates human rights and are involved in these war crimes.”

Jessica Wetz is avidly campaigning for Jagmeet Singh. X

Wetz chimes in: “Why would we buy and sell to a place that doesn’t respect international borders?”

Singh said the NDP covers all this in points of action by forwarding a motion. Sometimes as a team. Sometimes individually.

The OnlyFans far lefty, who appears to have missed the fact the streets of Canadian cities are clogged on a near daily basis with anti-Israel protesters, muses that Palestinians have been silenced.

Wetz said: “The censorship going on right now with Palestinian voices … we need to get out there have our voices heard as Canadians because we have the privilege of being able to vote and really have a say in this.”

Singh, playing Don Rickles to her Johnny Carson replies: “Yeah, get out and vote. We have an important platform to help people around the world.”

Wetz reveals that she met the NDP leader four years ago in the elevator of her apartment building. They made a TikTok video. Fast forward.

She wrote on Instagram: “He DMed me recently and asked if I wanted to talk healthcare and I said ‘OH YEAH!!!’

“I met Sanjeet one of his staff who’s fighting the system for endometriosis care that follows my content! I met Jasleen who manages his social media and is so kind.”

She added: “It’s inspiring to see @ndpcanada work so hard to make people’s voices heard. Jagmeet had more energy the more people he got to talk to. I aspire to be that level of extrovert! Haha.”

In addition to her OnlyFans gig, Wetz describes herself as a disabled activist and comedian. Mostly, she appears to be about sex and the Palestinians.

Barely a month after Hamas slaughtered 1,200 Israelis, she took to X: “Telling Netanyahu to chill is NOT ENOUGH @justintrudeau. Israel’s apartheid and genocide against Palestinians need to be stopped. #FreePalaestine (sic).”

But let’s get back to the sex.

One month before the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre, the saucy activist asked her sexxx-rated followers, accompanied by a photo of a woman being held upside down, if they wanted to see her perform a particular sex act.

Oddly, Wetz seems to have an entrepreneurial spirit, offering various calendars of herself for $45, along with hoodies and T-shirts with her name on them.

But most of all, Wetz is selling sex.

The Toronto Sun has reached out to the NDP for comment.
