Unlikely bromance as Starmer meets Trump at White House

They may be on opposite sides of the political spectrum, but Starmer and Trump showed a great fondness for each other as the British and American leaders met at the White House.

The leaders of the two great allies Britain and America showed much fondness towards each other, reminiscent of Thatcher/Reagan in the 1980s and Blair/Bush in the 2000s.

Trump, who is half-British, declared "I have a warm spot for the UK" whilst also attacking the EU which he says was set up to "screw" the United States, and Starmer invited the American President for an unprecedented second UK State Visit, which Trump accepted.

Trump has imposed tariffs on Canada, Mexico and is planning on doing the same to the EU, but will he do the same to Britain, a country which he loves?

The British Prime Minister presents the American President with an invitation from His Majesty the King for a second UK State Visit. Trump accepted the invitation and called the King "a great gentleman." Trump will be the first US President two have two UK State Visits.

America and Britain confirm a trade deal will be done quickly with no tariffs as the two great Anglophone allies "romanced" each other in the White House.

Starmer points out that the two nations are the No1 and No2 in the West for AI technology and says that AI and advanced technology will be at the forefront of the deal.

Trump said that the US Vice-President JD Vance and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent were among senior Republicans in the administration working on the potential deal.

Trump: "Our two great friendly countries could end up with a trade deal where tariffs wouldn't be necessary."

Whatever many people in Britain - including me - think about our Labour Prime Minister I must say he impressed today and had his strongest day as British PM since undertaking the role on 5th July.

When asked by a journalist if Starmer has persuaded him not to put tariffs onto the United Kingdom, the US President replied: "He tried. He was working hard, I'll tell you that!" before going on to suggest that Britain will be exempt from US tariffs.


Britain showed the world today the huge amount of "soft power" that she has. In terms of "soft power" Britain is number two in the world after the United States. Britain wielded her mighty "soft power" when it came to a meeting with the world's only remaining superpower today. All the British had to do was present the American President with an invitation by the King to a State Visit and I think that softened Trump up good and proper. The British no how to do these things. They did once rule much of the world.

If the Brits believe this, then they haven't been paying attention to Trump at all, especially how they've screwed Canada.

Yes, but the United States has a trade DEFICIT with Canada and has done for 40 years.

However, the US has a trade SURPLUS with Britain and so does Britain with the US (whereas Britain has a trade deficit with the EU).

So the United States can impose tariffs on Canada but likely sees no point in doing so on Britain.

I'll say again: This was an absolute masterclass by the British.

The British turned up in Washington DC and managed to get the world's only remaining superpower to agree to their every desires.

Trump says to Starmer: "You're a tough negotiator. I'm not sure I like that!"

Starmer giving Trump an invitation from the King for a State Visit to the UK - making Trump the first elected politician anywhere in the world to have two state visits to Britain - softened the President up. He knew it's an offer he'd be silly to refuse and that therefore he then couldn't do anything to anger the British.

Trump's mother was British and you can tell in the video the admiration that Trump has got for his ancestral homeland.

It was a stroke of British ingenuity. No wonder we once ruled the world. We have even the American President giving us what we want.

Just because they both claim that doesn’t make it true or real or even reasonable or logical. You and I can both say that we’re each older than the other….But can we both be each older than the other? Regardless of what we claim?
