A Pickering politician ripped into city officials after a meeting that was open to all residents was exposed to racial slurs, swastikas and pornography.
“Last night’s City of Pickering virtual Open House was horrifying!” Councillor Lisa Robinson shared on her social media pages.
“What was meant to be a public forum spiralled into a display of hate speech, swastikas, and explicit pornography – with no intervention from staff. This negligence allowed a traumatic event to unfold. I will never be able to erase what I saw.”
Wednesday’s event to discuss the City of Pickering’s climate adaptation plan was intended to be an in-person meeting but switched to a virtual public open house due to the winter storm.
Soon after consultant Jade Schofield began presenting the city’s draft plan, she was forced to stop when participants shared images of swastikas and racial slurs were uttered.
To top it off, what appeared to be someone pleasuring himself was also seen in one of the participant’s screen.
Robinson, who has been at odds with Mayor Kevin Ashe and other council members over her controversial stances, called out the city for their hypocrisy in allowing the meeting to continue, despite what was displayed on-screen.
“I’m in shock over what I witnessed during the City of Pickering’s virtual open house on the climate adaptation plan. What was supposed to be a public forum quickly turned into an explicit, racist, and pornographic nightmare that I cannot unsee,” she began her video, after which she shares footage of the shocking meeting.

She went on to detail how one participant “repeatedly shouted a vile racial slur,” which was followed by another drawing a swastika on the presentation screen, before “graphic pornographic content was displayed for all participants to see.”
Robinson noted how despite the event was open to all ages, “the staff did nothing” and “failed to immediately shut down the meeting, remove the offenders or take swift action to protect participants.”
The Ward 1 councillor added that the content stayed on the screen for an unacceptable amount of time, even though city staffers had full control over the meeting and could have shut it down.
Robinson then brought up how colleagues and City Council denounced her after her appearance on the podcast of convicted hate peddler Kevin J. Johnston, who has often railed about council.
“During the broadcast, the host published the names, pictures, and personal phone numbers of council members, falsely and dangerously labelling us as ‘pedophiles,’ ‘Nazis,’ and ‘fascists,’” a statement describing Robinson’s participation as an endorsement of Johnston’s views read, as the Sun’s Bryan Passifiume previously reported.
Despite Robinson condemning Johnston’s remarks, she said they are still pushing for criminal charges against her.
“If simply failing to immediately condemn a comment on a podcast is considered aiding and abetting by my colleagues, then what do you call allowing a swastika and pornographic content to remain up in a public meeting?” she asked.
“Does this mean the city was condoning racism, hate speech and pornography in an event for all ages?” Robinson wondered.
She noted how the the city could be seen as facilitating pornographic content, even if it was unintentional, and that it could be interpreted as “willful promotion of hatred” for allowing the racial slurs and displays of a swastika.
Robinson added: “The reckless disregard for the safety others shows criminal negligence and possibly child endangerment if minors were in the meeting.”
Now the councillor is demanding answers.
“Who was responsible for moderating this meeting? Why wasn’t it shut down immediately? Who in leadership was aware and when did they act?” she asked. “And will the same legal standards that were unfairly weaponized against me now be applied to those responsible for this failure?”
The Toronto Sun reached out to Pickering City Council for comment and Councillor Robinson for further comment but did not hear back in time for publication.
However, in a statement sent to the Toronto Sun, the City of Pickering blamed “a handful of external individuals” for the “planned and coordinated hack” that has been reported to local police.
“The consultant has previously used this platform many times without issue,” the City of Pickering said. “However, when this hack occurred, the consultant acted quickly to address the disruptions, and when they couldn’t eject these individuals from the platform, staff decided to terminate the open house entirely – approximately two minutes after the first interruptions.”
“The City of Pickering has a zero-tolerance policy towards unlawful, hateful, or inappropriate actions and is committed to maintaining a respectful, harassment-free environment,” the statement continued. “And as such, we have reached out to Durham Regional Police Services to investigate this disturbing incident.”
