Where does 10% come from?
A mental happy medium, so that Canada feels like it wins at not being tariffed at 25% on everything, & Trump as a new again president can show his base and country that he and they have also won by getting to pay more for Canadian products.

It’s a negotiation, so both sides have to show that they’ve accomplished something…beyond just tightening things up on borders and immigration and fentanyl and so on and so forth.

10% is less than half of 25%, and it’s round number, & it might only be on Canadian Dairy products & maple syrup, but Trump also has to show a win on the tariffs that he’s been going on about.

U.S. president-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated on Monday and has threatened to impose blanket 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian imports as one of his first of “many” executive orders, as soon as he’s back in the White House.

Trump initially used the flow of illegal migrants and drugs over the border as reason for imposing tariffs, but he has since shifted emphasis rhetorically to praising the use of tariffs — as he sees it —on their own merit, and as a way to address the U.S. trade deficit with Canada.

Why 10%? The goal of threat was a) do something aboot the gaps in border security b) do more to curtail the fentanyl that kills 75,000ish people in the US a year.

Its a long game terrorist attack by China equal to 50 911's per year.

Did we not appease Grumpy Don and Homan?

Why is Homan happy with upping our game after consulations mid December but nobody else? Has he or Trump said it was inadequate?

10% also doesn’t obviously have a “5” in it like “25%” does…so it won’t be compared like 25% if settled at 5%, etc…& what number do you think it’ll settle at now that the tariffs aren’t focused on borders & drugs & immigration?

Can you link to anything on 10% or that the game changed from border/fenty issue? We're we threatened with losing our "preferred nation" trade status? What does this trade deficit arise from? Which export sectors are creating said trade deficit? Whats the impact on US consumers if tariffs are initiated? Are you buying hype?

Ugh….Have you listened to anything in the last month with respect to Trump? He’s gotten what he wants for a commitment from Canada on the border with respect to immigration and drugs…but…it hasn’t stopped his “negotiation” with Canada on tariffs, has it?

First, he was saying a $100 billion deficit, then he said a $200 billion deficit, and hasn’t been mentioning the immigration or drugs thing the last month or so. Weird eh?

10% I pulled out of my arse, & it feels right. What percentage do you think it’s gonna be, & on what, so that Trump can demonstrate that his tariffs are a winning strategy…& 0% isn’t something he can wave around.

The trade deficit's a hundred million gazillion skins, and we need tariffs to secure the border, pay for the tax cut for billionaires, and there is no debt or deficit.

Ive listened to hype that doesnt match the reality.

Who is negotiating? I only see posturing. Did Smith go to Mar-a-Lago to beg or was it just a coincidence she announced doubling exports to fill the heavy oil gap needed by US refineries? Is that the negotiations you are referring to or has there been others. If so who?

Are we poised for an election? Would our politicians dare use this to create an image of strength and resolve above other contenders? Sure as shit they would.

In reality the trade deficit is $140Bish and its all oil which flucuates by demand. When Trump said "drill baby drill", was it drilling for crude or for tight shale kerogen which lacks the capacity needed for the petrochemical industries? Is there another readily available source for heavy crude that can appear overnight?

What happens to our $ if tariffs were implemented? Obviously drive it down only making ours good even more attractive. The point of a tariff is keeping outside goods from competing with domestic. Would more Canadian goods add to US GDP?

Put it back in your arse where it belongs.

What on earth do posturing and optics have to do with reality?
Who is negotiating?
Well, why do you think this talk of tariffs hasn’t gone away a month ago? Why do you think the premiers are meeting with even lame duck Trudeau about tariffs this week? Why do you think Trump hasn’t pulled back his tariff threat with Canada? Mexico? China? Etc…?

Yes, America has a trade deficit with Canada, and by the time you work in goods “& services” it’s about $40 billion. America (with its tenfold population) buys more from Canada than Canada can buy from it. It’s smoke and mirrors.
I only see posturing.
Why are you seeing that?
Are we poised for an election?
Eventually. Maybe in the spring, or the summer, or the fall, or sometime in 2026 when it’s “right” for the Liberals if they declared this in economic emergency.

Sort of sounds like she was setting the stage for negotiations…? Or was it just a coincidence she announced her willingness towards doubling exports to fill the heavy oil gap needed by US refineries?
Is there another readily available source for heavy crude that can appear overnight?
Overnight? No. I think everybody’s aware of that, & why Doug Ford came out and said that he wants to use Alberta’s heavy crude to insulate the Ontario auto industry.

Pretty sure somebody would’ve pointed out to Mr. Trump that about 60% of the imports of petroleum products into America are coming from Canada, and by far the bulk of that is coming from Alberta, & that many of their refineries are set up specifically for that type of crude, and not for what America is producing itself for crude, etc…

We only have to wait a few days or a week to see what he (Trump) is gonna do. Let’s wait and see. I think he wants a win on the scoreboard for his tariffs (and walking away from such a soft target as Canada with 0% tariffs applied for Americans to pay for does it come across as a win).

Maybe it’ll just be softwood lumber & maple syrup, and a number (a round number) lower than 25%. Let’s give it a week and revisit this.

Now that LA needs a major facelift, upping the tax on softwood lumber seems like a good idea to get even with all the rich socialists that voted Democrat.

There was only one direcr tariff threat to Canada that was dealt with. Just one. I'd love to read aboot all the other direct threats that he actually made. Got links?

There was only one direcr tariff threat to Canada that was dealt with. Just one. I'd love to read aboot all the other direct threats that he actually made. Got links?
The president-elect has claimed the U.S. is subsidizing Canada to the tune of $200 billion per year, through a combination of trade deficit, military spending, and other measures. He has threatened to implement a 25-per-cent tariff on Canadian goods when he is inaugurated on Jan. 20, which has thrown Canada’s governments into chaos, as premiers and federal politicians attempt to find a way to placate the incoming U.S. president and, if tariffs can’t be avoided, somehow fight back.
There are three objectives to Trump's tariffs, his nominee for treasury secretary told a Senate confirmation hearing this past week.

One is to remedy unfair trade practices, either by industry or by country, said Scott Bessent, who alluded specifically to China and steel.

A second: to raise revenue. "For the federal budget," said Bessent, a billionaire financier.
And finally, there's the art of the deal. "For negotiations," he said, explaining that the tariffs can be used as leverage over other countries instead of sanctions, which he said Trump believes are over-used.
Canada's ambassador to Washington said Monday that Canada is prepared to buy more from the United States, including its next fleet of submarines, to appease President-elect Donald Trump's concerns about the U.S.-Canada trade deficit. Trump continues to erroneously cast the U.S. trade deficit with Canada — a natural resource-rich nation that provides the U.S. with commodities like oil — as a subsidy.
President-elect Donald Trump has justified his threat of 25% tariffs on Canada by pointing to the US trade deficit.
Donald Trump's threat of whopping tariffs on Canadian exports and his trolling of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are key tactics in a negotiating strategy to extract the best trade terms for the U.S., according to people who have worked with or closely observed him over the years.
Guess what they’re not talking about above? Immigrants & fentanyl. That’s so last month.

Where is the "or else" deadline? When does all this need to be done?

Deadline is a threat. Trade is a negotiation. Trump got what he wanted on the fenty/Dot-not-Feather front…but the tariff talk didn’t go away, but shifted to “Trade Deficit” as reasoning…& that sounds like negotiation. Aggressive negotiation, but negotiation.

Canada is on tenterhooks as Donald Trump prepares to be sworn in as 47th President of the United States of America. The main source of anxiety is the near certainty that Trump will impose tariffs on all or some Canadian exports, as soon as inauguration day. It’s possible he will make good on his wild threat, first uttered in late November, of a 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian and Mexican imports.

President Trump at first tied his tariff threat to unspecified demands on both countries related to border security, illegal drugs and migration. However, since November, he has also complained multiple times about Canada’s defence spending and the Canada-U.S. trade deficit, which he grossly exaggerates and misleadingly refers to as a U.S. subsidy, sowing confusion about his plans and ultimate goals.

Even if Canada avoids a bilateral 25 per cent tariff, it’s still possible Canadian goods will be covered by Trump’s threatened global 10 or 20 per cent tariff on all U.S. imports. Trump’s economic advisory team is reportedly considering phasing in the global tariff by two to five per cent a month in an effort to temper inflationary pressures from the tariffs in the U.S.

A threat. As for negotiations, why bother dealing with Liberals when can deal with a new Canadian Govt that sees more eye to eye (like a proctologist and a patient) who both will be working together for the next 4 years?

Its in Canada and America's best interest to do so.

I agree, once a new Canadian Govt is allowed to happen after an election is allowed to happen, and there’s now guarantee on when that’s allowed to happen.

It’s all in the air at this point, & Jagmeet’s loyalty to anyone but himself is no guarantee whatsoever. An election call in late May is not the sure bet some might think it is.

Interesting, if that’s what happened. Trudeau has yet to step down, but your theoretical three months have not passed yet. He has announced an attention to step down, which isn’t stepping down, as of yet.

Trump is also threatening tariffs in so many different directions with so many different countries, that I can also picture a unified response from many directions back towards the US potentially. Trump might be unintentionally, creating a union of trading partners with each other that happened to trade with America.

Trump isnt the only dog that can lift its leg and piss on Trudeau. There has been a shift in the G7 and in the EU.

He"s always threatened tariffs. Rewind to his last term. He did the same.

We're in WWW3, its still the economic and trade phase. Do you think Trudeau has his shit together to go deeper?
