Not to say Trudeau's stance is exceptional, it's instead typical. But at least he's NOT giving "aid" to Trump's talking points.
Mr. Trump last Monday on social media vowed to slap 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico until the two countries stop illegal migration and smuggling of opioids such as fentanyl from their territories into the United States.
Canada has promised Donald Trump that it will deploy additional drones, helicopters and personnel to safeguard its side of the border with the United States, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc says, in an effort to convince the American leader to shelve the steep tariffs he’s threatened on Canadian goods.
Peter Wilkinson, who was Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly’s chief of staff, says this country’s health care and social welfare systems would buckle under the pressure

But, Mr. LeBlanc acknowledged, Canada has not so far obtained any assurances that the U.S. president-elect will back away from the threatened tariffs.
Mr. LeBlanc accompanied Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to a dinner Friday night at Mar-a-Lago, Mr. Trump’s resort residence in Palm Beach, Fla.,
where they spent three hours talking to the president-elect and his team.
He said they told the Americans that Canada is “going to look to procure, for example, additional drones, additional police helicopters” and redeploy staff as needed, the minister told CBC News Sunday.
“It’s important, I think, to show Canadians and the Americans that we’re stepping up in a visible and muscular way, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
The U.S. president-elect hasn’t yet said he will back down from his plan to slap 25-per-cent tariffs on Canadian imports, following a meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau

Nobody is laughing at this point. Maybe punching more holes in their belts, but not laughing.
The Public Safety Minister said he remains confident the Republicans will ultimately realize the tariffs are the wrong idea. And he said he believes Canada still has time to make its case. He said he believes Mr. Trump likes Mr. Trudeau???
(On Monday, former U.S. president Donald Trump repeated the false claim that Fidel Castro could be Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's real father. While Trump frequently expresses his love for Canada, he has previously taken aim at Trudeau for being "two faced," "weak" and a "far-left lunatic.")

And yet Poilievre continues to prove he doesn't deserve the leadership and PM status with stunts like he's pulling over the tariff threat from Trump. Instead, he'd rather undermine any position Canada has all to get at Trudeau.
Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre called for the government to deputize provincial police officers to help out at the border, and to give border guards more power to enforce laws away from their border posts.
“I’m demanding that the Trudeau government quickly present a Canada-first plan to parliament that includes increased patrols, working with provincial law enforcement, deploying new technology, cracking down on illegal drug production and trafficking, tightening visas, securing our ports and expanding the mandate of CBSA officers to fix the broken border,” he told reporters in Ottawa.
Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne says the Canadian presence at the border it shares with the U.S. will be “very visible” in response to U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s recent tariff threats.

Expanding the powers of CBSA would mirror a U.S. policy that allows border guards to enforce immigration laws up to 100 miles within the country. Under that policy, they use highway checkpoints leading from the border to catch unauthorised border crossers who manage to escape detection at the border.
In addition to more helicopters and drones, Mr. Poilievre also called for more towers and scanners to be deployed to the border.
We can crack down on illegal immigration (and emigration) and drug (& gun) smuggling in both directions at our border…at the same time!! It’s the same Border!!! Wouldn’t that be cool? Decreasing the amount of of illegal immigration, & drug smuggling, & gun smuggling, etc…coming into Canada Is half of the issue solved (or working towards being solved), & a decrease in the amount of illicit goods & bodies flowing into the US would be a byproduct of that. Huh…
He also pointed out that the flow at the border goes both ways, with illegal crime guns and drugs flowing from the U.S. into Canada.
Now for a twist. We increase military spending, drones, etc…& utilize that resource to combat/enforce our own border security domestically. This increases military spending, decreases crime, Slows down the open floodgate of handguns coming in from the US into Canada, slows down the illegal importation of fentanyl into our nation, etc…
