How’re you all gonna spend your newfound fortunes? This week, the federal government will return a small portion of some Canadians’ hard-earned tax dollars to their bank accounts. The Liberals are calling the move a one-time “Grocery Rebate,” supposedly meant to make up for higher food prices caused by inflation.

However, in practice, the payment has no real connection to grocery prices or the soaring cost of living. It’s essentially a GST/HST credit top up, branded to make it look like the Liberals aren’t entirely tone deaf to the immense financial pressures felt by many Canadians. Yet the effort is such a feeble one, it reveals them to be exactly that.

To qualify for the rebate, Canadians must either have a household income of $38,000 or less, or an individual income of less than $32,000.

***For context, a minimum wage employee who earns $15 per hour and works 40 hours per week makes $31,200 annually.***

Most Canadians won’t be eligible for what little financial relief the rebate offers — and it is incredibly little.

The maximum payout for a person with no children is $234, while a couple with four children could max out at $628. Broken down, that’s $104 per family member. Keep in mind these are the maximum payouts Liberals like to tout in the press; many, if not most, recipients will receive smaller amounts.

(Rest at the above link, etc….The Grocery Rebate may make good content for Liberal MPs’ social media accounts and the summer barbecue circuit, but it shouldn’t be mistaken for anything resembling effective fiscal policy.)

Could have just cancelled the carbon scam tax and everyone would come out a winner. Bonus points for eliminating the bureaucraps that administer the carbon scam tax. Also wouldn’t need so many bureaucraps in GST Either, since there would be no need to work out complex refunds.

Nobody going to invest their windfall (assuming they receive something) into the stock market (?) or the Casino (?) or bitcoin (?) or lottery tickets (?) or VLT’s or what have you….To try and turn this into bigger money?

It’s found/free (?) $$$ assuming you are earning something around minimum wage or less….so any ideas how somebody can turn this into more money to get them through this next financial whatever that our economy is currently going through?

Well touting this as a 'rebate for Canadians' or whatever isn't exactly true if it's only for 'certain people'.

Like the rest of us don't buy groceries either...
If the entire country is a population of maybe 40,000,000 people….(?) & the current government expects 11,000,000 HOUSEHOLDS to receive this… whatever you wanna call this cheque…& to receive it. You have to be earning about minimum wage or less….Doesn’t that mean we’re already screwed?

(personally, I have not seen a GST check in about two decades, but that’s just me)

I had a GST check maybe... twice, years ago.

Not anymore.

I love how it says "modest income". Just what is 'modest income' nowadays? I mean sure, 32K is low, but so is 50K, to be honest, especially if you're single. When I first moved out from my parents, 100$ got me enough groceries for two weeks; now I need to pay out 250 or so to make 2 weeks. Local grocery here is insane for prices. If it wasn't for a vehicle, I'd be stuck paying out that much but being able to travel at least gives me choice.

Then again, it also means I'm paying out for car and insurance. So really you're no further ahead.

In the end, this is meh because it's not really for "Canadians", it's for "Some Canadians" even if more could use the help.
