Poland convenes NATO meeting after deadly explosion reportedly caused by Russian missile

Government spokesperson says 2 killed in blast but doesn't confirm missile strike

attacked country by taking "such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force."

However, each country has no obligation to respond militarily.

Russia denies responsibility

In Washington, the Pentagon, White House and U.S. State Department said they could not corroborate the report and were working with the Polish government to gather more information. The State Department said the report was "incredibly concerning."

Germany said it was monitoring the situation, and Norway said it was seeking details.

Russia's Defence Ministry denied that Russian missiles hit Polish territory, describing reports as "a deliberate provocation aimed at escalating the situation."

It added in a statement: "No strikes on targets near the Ukrainian-Polish state border were made by Russian means of destruction."

The Kremlin did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

Russia was pounding cities across Ukraine with missiles on Tuesday, in attacks that Kyiv said were the heaviest wave of missile strikes in nearly nine months of war. Some hit Lviv, which is less than 80 kilometres from the border with Poland.

BALI (Reuters) - Global leaders who were gathering for the G20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia, were holding an emergency meeting on Wednesday after two people in Poland were killed in explosions that Ukraine and Polish authorities said were caused by Russian missiles.
Leaders from the United States, Germany, Canada, Netherlands, Japan, Spain, Italy, France and the UK were taking part in the meeting.

WARSAW (Reuters) -A missile that killed two people in Poland was probably not fired from Russia, U.S. President Joe Biden said on Wednesday after an emergency meeting of NATO leaders called to discuss what Poland called a strike by a Russia-made projectile.

A Russian strike on Poland could risk widening the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are committed to collective defence under its Article 5.

The Polish foreign ministry said the rocket fell on Przewodow, a village about 6 km (4 miles) from the border with Ukraine. Russia denied it was responsible for the explosion but Polish officials said the missile was Russian-made.

Asked whether it was too early to say if the missile was fired from Russia, Biden said: “There is preliminary information that contests that. I don’t want to say that until we completely investigate it, but it is unlikely in the lines of the trajectory that it was fired from Russia but we’ll see.”

The United States and NATO countries would fully investigate before acting, Biden said. The rest at the above link.

That leaves Belarus or Kaliningrad or hopefully it was an S300 Ukraine fired at an incoming Russian Kalibr that missed which will ease NATO minds.

Earlier US was saying they tracked the missles from Russia.....hmmmm.

Yeah you know they are going to blame a Ukrainian S300 flying off course from trying to intercept a Russian missile so Article 5 doesn't come into play, but I bet Patriot missiles, long range missiles and jets will be delivered to Ukraine to compensate for taking the blame, since they are already providing pictures of a S 300 engine plate that could have been built in Russia or Ukraine.

I find it interesting that it must have been a heat seeking missile that hit a grain dryer

And here we go

WARSAW (Reuters) -A missile that hit Poland was “probably” a stray fired by Ukraine’s air defences and not a Russian strike, Poland and NATO said on Wednesday, easing global concern that the war in Ukraine could spill across the border.

“From the information that we and our allies have, it was an S-300 rocket made in the Soviet Union, an old rocket and there is no evidence that it was launched by the Russian side,” Polish President Andrzej Duda said. “It is highly probable that it was fired by Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense.”

Polish Prime Minister Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Warsaw might not need to activate Article 4 of NATO’s treaty, which calls for consultations when a member country considers its security under threat.

I don't think so. Ukraine is taking the blame to avoid a major escalation by being the "bigger country" so to speak. Ukrainian surface to air S300s self destruct if they miss. NATO will still respond in a big way by cutting the sabotuers loose.

There has already been a spate of fires in Russia. Watch for a huge spike.

The S-300 (NATO reporting name SA-10 Grumble) is a series of long range surface-to-air missile systems developed and operated by the former Soviet Union, now fielded by the militaries of Russia and Ukraine as well as several other former Eastern Bloc countries.
