Calgary Starbucks location becomes 1st to unionize in Alberta

A majority of the 32 workers at the Starbucks located at 150 Millrise Boulevard S.W. participated in a mail-in ballot and will join the United Steelworkers (USW) union.

"We are proud to welcome workers from the first unionized Starbucks store in Alberta to our growing union family," said Scott Lunny, USW director for Western Canada, in a release.

Now it's up to Starbucks.

Historically, employers who have genuinely welcomed unions and brought them into every phase of planning and execution have found the unions to provide useful, high-quality ideas and valuable assistance in implementing them.

Employers who treat unions as enemies suffer wasteful nit-picking, featherbedding, and a flood of grievances, complaints, and charges as the unions fight back.

Your move, Starbucks.

Couldn't have picked a worse union. When USW took over IWA it changed from I walk alone to I still walk alone.

Are they now millionaire coffeewallas at the one location that will get shuttered like hundreds of other Starbucks?
