I can not believe that the USA is considering speed limiters trucks..

Personally I like the idea.. however there is already a driver shortage and delays in delivering goods..

This will slow down the transportation of goods, drivers will be paid more passing that cost to consumers… and they will lose about 50,000 drivers

Just came back from No Frills-the shelves are jammed with goods even after a long busy Sunday that left the store looking messy & grubby-a few blocks away Granville Island market was mobbed by 10:00 hrs this AM.

I was gonna jump in with a comment but this video pretty much says exactly what I was gonna say:

Multiple vehicle types with multiple speed limits on the same road creates unpredictable situations, and unpredictable situations creates accidents.

The speed limiter set at 68 or 65 or 60 (and I’ve heard talk of 55 mph) would potentially increase fuel savings for the trucks…. But sure as hell not for everybody else trying to work their way around them.

Many trucks on the road have drivers that are paid per loaded mile. A speed limit means they can do less miles, making their wage go down…. So the carrier has to increase their rate per loaded mile just to bring it back to where it was…. So that they’re at least making the same amount of money as they were before due to the speed limiter…. But they are delivering less goods in more time….thus the carriers costs increases…. So the carrier passes this on to his customers… and his customer is past this cost onto their customers which would be You. Bingo!

Just like with a carbon tax it will trickle through the system and eventually the cost of everything will go up.

Of course, the smart thing to do would be to use big-data analytics to calculate cost increases and accidents avoided, then make a decision of limiters, how many, set to what speeds, and why only trucks. Then make your decisions.

If they, let’s say, reduce the maximum speed limit to 55 mph for everybody there would be fuel cost savings, but would this fly?

ANy truck I ever drove was speed limited by the simple technique of gear ratios. Only had 1 that would do over 75 miles an hour. Although new ones can be limited by the engine computer, which is easy to adjust.

That was tried back in the 80s when the world ran out of oil.(big scam) Didn't work then and won't work now.

Doesn’t have to be 55mph though….just pick a number & everyone in that road goes that speed. Predictably predictable.

Standard horse-drawn conveyances can do about 10 kph for long stretches. Why don't we make that the standard? "Conservatives" always bang on about how the old days were perfect in every aspect. . .
