The Year is 1922

The year is 1922,"One hundred years ago."
What a difference a century makes!

Here are some statistics for Year 1922:

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.
Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only.
Only 14 percent of homes had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of homes had a telephone.
Only 18 percent of households had at least one full-time servant or
domestic help.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.

The average US wage in 1922 was 22 cents per hour.
The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000 per year.
A dentist earned $2,500 per year.
A veterinarian between $1,500 and 4,000 per year.
And, a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women washed their hair once a month ...

And, used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet.
There was neither a Mother's Day nor Father's Day.
Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write ...
And, only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at home.
Ninety percent of all Doctors hadNO COLLEGE EDUCATION!
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were
condemned in the press AND in the government as "substandard."
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were available over the counterat local
drug stores. Back then pharmacists said: "Heroin clears the complexion,
gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach, bowels, and is a perfect
guardian of health!" (Shocking?)

The Five leading causes of death were:
1 Pneumonia and influenza
2 Tuberculosis
3 Diarrhea
4 Heart disease
5 Stroke

Canada passed law prohibiting poor people from entering into their country for any reason.
The American flag had 45 stars ...
The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30.
There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A.

'Justinflation' can't be said in the House of Commons, but MPs are trying anyway

OTTAWA ā€” The Conservativesā€™ cheeky term for inflation under the Liberals has got some MPs into trouble in the House of Commons, where saying ā€œJustinflationā€ has been deemed verboten.

Speaker Anthony Rota repeatedly chastised Tory MPs this week for breaking the rules, asking them to ā€œcorrect the errorā€ when their ā€œplay on wordsā€ was indirectly violating procedure.

The House of Commons has long dictated that members of Parliament must use each otherā€™s titles during debate, but never their first names ā€” so anything that deliberately includes ā€œJustin,ā€ the prime ministerā€™s first name, is out.

Conservatives have yet to be deterred, however, with the daily transcript of proceedings in the House of Commons recording their use of the term more than a hundred times since last November.

Thatā€™s when Pierre Poilievre, who was finance critic at the time and has since become Conservative leader, began to popularize the term.

Some MPs seemed to respond to Rotaā€™s warnings by adding an exaggerated pause between the two words on Wednesday ā€” just in case.

The Liberals rose to complain about the term as far back as March, and again this week, after Conservative MP Garnett Genuis said ā€œJustinflationā€ three times in one speech.

Liberal MP Kevin Lamoureux said he had been ā€œsomewhat patient with the memberā€ but that three times was enough to tell that Genuis was using the ā€œunparliamentaryā€ and ā€œinappropriateā€ phrase intentionally to flout the rules.

Longtime NDP MP Charlie Angus chimed in, complaining that Genuis uses the term all the time. ā€œIt is a little lame and I do not think it is appropriate. We can lead a horse to water, but we cannot make it think. The Speaker should ask the member to withdraw his lame comment.ā€

The assistant deputy Speaker, Carol Hughes, said: ā€œI know the member is working it into his speech a little differently, but again I want to caution him on the use of that word.ā€

Conservatives, who have been working it into their speeches a little differently at myriad opportunities, arenā€™t the only ones in on the joke.

NDP MP Niki Ashton, in a statement to the House last week, alluded to it by saying that while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Poilievre have little in common, they are both ā€œjust in bed with their corporate buddies.ā€

Trudeau himself has only uttered ā€œjust inflationā€ on one occasion in the House, when he tried to turn the tables on the Tories last December.

ā€œThey tell Canadians about the problems they are facing with decreased affordability, increased prices on everything, difficulty buying gas, difficulty buying computers, and they shrug and say, ā€˜Oh, itā€™s just inflation,ā€ā€˜ he said.

ā€œWell, it is not just inflation; it is the focus that we have to have to continue to invest in Canadians.ā€

He never said it again.

Actually, MPs can say 'Justinflation,' as long as they pronounce it properly
There are rules about language in the House and those rules must be followed

Iā€™m hearing from lots of angry Conservative supporters who claim the Speaker of the House of Commons has banned the term ā€œJustinflation.ā€ There is even a Canadian Press story out saying the term is now verboten in the Commons.

Thatā€™s not really true and it all comes down to how MPs say the word, or words, and where they put the emphasis.

Calling Canadaā€™s inflation problem ā€œJustinflationā€ has been a mainstay for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre for the last year. He always says it in the House as ā€œJustā€¦inflationā€ in a way that recognizes they are two words but also ties them together.

The reason this matters is that the rules of the House of Commons state that when MPs are speaking, they cannot refer to other members by name, they are required to use their titles. Thus we have the prime minister, the leader of the opposition or the member for Thornhill.

The member for Thornhill, Melissa Lantsman, was one of the MPs who used the term ā€œJustinflationā€ this past week and was cautioned by the Speaker. Lantsman said there was a ā€œ40-year high in Justin flationā€ when she was asking the government a question.

She put the emphasis on Justin, which of course is the prime ministerā€™s name and therefore not allowed. Yet when Speaker Anthony Rota rose to issue his caution, he never told Lantsman or any other MPs that they couldnā€™t use the term.

ā€œI just want to remind the honourable members that you canā€™t do indirectly what you canā€™t do directly. Maybe if you are saying something, maybe just insert the pause where itā€™s supposed to be,ā€ Rota said Wednesday.

Silly as all of this might sound, there are rules about language in the House and those rules must be followed. In addition to banning the use of personal names, MPs also canā€™t refer to one another as a liar, thatā€™s considered unparliamentary language. Yet MPs find ways around that by accusing each other of being ā€œunfamiliar with the truthā€ or other such euphemisms.

Thatā€™s what Poilievre is doing here, heā€™s skirting the rules by pronouncing ā€œJust-inflationā€ correctly, with a pause that follows the rules but makes his point ā€“ that Justin Trudeau is to blame for inflation.

The tactic has clearly irritated the Liberals.

As the Canadian Press article points out, the governing party has been complaining about this for months. Though last December, to great howls of delight, Trudeau did use the phrase when asked repeated questions about inflation and the pressures on Canadian family budgets just before Christmas.

ā€œThey play word games. We are focused on delivering on housing, child care and support that Canadians need, while the Conservatives play cheap political games,ā€ Trudeau said in the Commons as Conservatives cheered after he uttered the words ā€œjust inflationā€ twice during his answer.

This is about more than word games in the House of Commons. The Conservatives are rightly trying to tie the economic policies of the Trudeau Liberals to the inflation Canadians are dealing with. While the Liberals can rightly claim inflation is a global problem, they arenā€™t telling the truth when they say that their policies havenā€™t played a role in making things worse.

Despite the cautions from the Speaker, we are going to continue to hear Conservative members call this what it is, ā€œJustinflation,ā€ weā€™ll just hear them ā€¦. pause, and perhaps annunciate a bit better in coming days.

Itā€™s a rule in parliament that you cannot address another member by name. Somebody has to follow the rules, so it might as well be the Official Opposition, ā€˜cuz who else will?

Youā€™ll notice that another MP doesnā€™t address Freeland directly as Chrystia or the Shrill Shrew, but as the ā€œRight Honourable Something Something Deputy PMā€ā€¦.

Ruling says Justin-Flation isnā€™t cool, & Just-Inflation isā€¦.so be itā€¦& thatā€™s what youā€™ll hear going forward.
