The mutiliated body of a young Ukrainian woman was discovered in the ravaged city of Bucha.
Karina Yershova, 23, was raped, tortured and shot in the head by Russian soldiers, according to her family.
“She was shot at point-blank range,” Andrii Dereko, the woman’s stepfather, told the Telegraph. “Almost half of her head was missing.”
She was found dumped in a backyard with “tears” and “wounds” all over her body, her parents revealed, with most of her fingernails missing.
“It was like she had been trying to fight,” Derenko told the news outlet.
She also had a tourniquet around her leg in an attempt to stop the bleeding from a gunshot wound.
The family was told by police that Yershova had been murdered and tortured, but authorities withheld the more “horrific” details from them.
“We think it possible that she was raped,” Andrii said. “We have not seen the lower part of her body, just the upper part, but what we have seen at the top, we can only imagine what can be on the rest of her body.”
Olesya Vasylets, a friend of the victim’s mother, wrote on Facebook about the Russian “racists” who killed Yershova.
“Friends, terrible news. Racists killed my friend’s daughter Karina Yershova,” she began the post.
“The pain is terrible. She was mocked, raped, and then shot in the trash,” she continued. “Today my mother found out that she was killed and created a help group. Please help me bury her, I knew this kid for years, taught her English, she was a very bright and talented girl.”
Yershova disappeared early last month. On March 10, her mother took to social media to appeal to anyone with information to “help me find my daughter.”
More than 400 bodies have been found in Bucha after Moscow’s soldiers withdrew from the Kyiv suburb earlier this month.
The harrowing incident is thought to be one of the latest examples of brutality enacted upon helpless civilians as Russia’s war on Ukraine enters its seventh week.
An intercepted phone call between a Russian soldier and his wife heard her give him permission to rape Ukrainian women.
In the chilling clip, she begs her husband to “use protection” and not to tell her any details when he gets home.
