Run for the caves folks, we’re gonna freeze to death, starve to death, get sick or all of the above.

ATHENS — The heaviest snowfall to hit Greece in 12 years triggered power cuts, disrupted transport and trapped people in their homes on Monday.

A cold front swept across the country from Saturday, driving temperatures down to -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit) in northern Greece and causing rare snowfall in Athens after a period of unseasonably warm weather.

The head of the National Meteorological Service, Theodoros Kolydas, said the snowfall was the “fiercest, in terms of intensity and volume, in 12 years.”

In the town of Kapandriti, a few miles north of the capital, snow blanketed roads and vehicles.

“I haven’t (seen) this in 10, 12 years. It’s a lot of snow,” resident Panagiotis Oikonomou said as he cleared the entrance of his home with a shovel.

Power cuts were reported across mainland Greece and on islands off its eastern coast that were lashed by gale force winds, the main power grid operator said.

At least six people have had to be rescued from the snow since Sunday, the fire brigade said.

Authorities briefly closed off sections of highways and appealed to the public to avoid non-essential travel.

The meteorological service issued a severe weather warning on Monday as the cold front is forecast to persist until Wednesday, moving further south including to the Mediterranean island of Crete.

Amsterdam skaters fall through ice into frozen canal before being rescued

In Britain we'd get arrested for doing such a thing as it's not a Government-sanctioned activity. The Dutch are just allowed to get on with their lives.

The North West Passage, Wikipedia.
In the 21st century, major changes to the ice pack due to climate change have stirred speculation that the passage may become clear enough of ice to permit safe commercial shipping for at least part of the year. On August 21, 2007, the Northwest Passage became open to ships without the need of an icebreaker. According to Nalan Koc of the Norwegian Polar Institute, this was the first time the Passage has been clear since they began keeping records in 1972.[6][20]The Northwest Passage opened again on August 25, 2008.[21] It is usually reported in mainstream media that ocean thawing will open up the Northwest Passage (and the Northern Sea Route) for various kind of ships, making it possible to sail around the Arctic ice cap[22] and possibly cutting thousands of miles off shipping routes. Warning that the NASA satellite images suggested that the Arctic had entered a "death spiral" caused by climate change, Professor Mark Serreze, a sea ice specialist at the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) said: "The passages are open. It's a historic event. We are going to see this more and more as the years go by.

Why did it freeze up for 500 years during the coldest point in the history of modern man? Was it to stay the coldest point in modern human history? Is it open now? Why are Canada and other northern countries build bigger, badder ice breakers? Why were 1930s and 40s so fucking hot? Why did it drastically cool post WW2? Is -35 truly hotter than -36?

After another frigid weekend in Saskatchewan, Environment Canada is reporting a new spate of record daily minimum temperatures.

On Saturday, 17 areas of the province set record lows.

The Rosetown area broke a record that had stood for nearly 100 years — since 1922 — with a new low of –38.1 C. Records keeping in the area started in 1913.

The Nipawin area recorded temperatures of –43.9 C, breaking the previous low for that day of –42.8 C set in 1936. Records in this area have been kept since 1927.

Other records set on Saturday included:

  • Broadview area, –41.4 C.
  • Coronach area, –37.2 C.
  • Elbow area, –40.1 C.
  • Hudson Bay area, –41.9 C.
  • Indian Head area, –41.1 C.
  • Kindersley area, –36.4 C.
  • Last Mountain Lake, –42.5 C.
  • Lucky Lake area, –36.3 C.
  • Meadow Lake area, –37.6 C.
  • Melfort area, –41.7 C.
  • Rockglen area, –32.9 C.
  • Watrous area, –41.5 C.
  • Weyburn area, –38.4 C.
  • Wynyard area, –39.2 C.
  • Yorkton area, –39.2 C.
Nine more daily low temperature records fell on Sunday:

  • Assiniboia area, –34.2.
  • Coronach area, –36.7.
  • Elbow area, –37.5.
  • Kindersley area, –34.4.
  • Lucky Lake area, –33.3.
  • Rockglen area, –32.6.
  • Watrous area, –36.2.
  • Weyburn area, –36.7.
  • Yorkton area, –36.5.
According to Kyle Fougere, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, it is fairly typical to see some extra-cold temperatures in Saskatchewan in February.

"This has been a particularly cold one — we've had very cold temperatures [with] overnight lows of below –40 for several days in Saskatchewan over the last 10 days," he said.

ATHENS, GREECE -- Heavy snowfall blanketed the Acropolis and other ancient monuments in Athens, caused power cuts and halted COVID-19 vaccinations in the Greek capital on Tuesday as the weather brought many services across the country to a standstill.

Greek media reported that three deaths in separate parts of the country were linked with the bad weather. State ERT TV said two elderly men with breathing problems died after their mechanical respiratory aids stopped working due to power cuts, and a farmer on the island of Crete was found dead in a snow-covered area near his sheepfold.

While western Europe got some respite from winter weather, temperatures plunged in the southeast of the continent and storms also battered Turkey.

The snow, an unusual sight in the Greek capital of more than 3 million residents, also stopped most public transport services. Hundreds of toppled trees downed power cables, causing blackouts in several suburbs, while one area on the city's northern fringes was declared in a state of emergency for the next month. Some of the affected suburbs were also left without water.
