So if I read this correctly his birth certificate was good enough to get him through school and into the military but not good enough to come home after volunteering to protect his country.

Sounds like typical bureaucrapic bungling to me.
The way I see it if you join a country's military and risk your life for that country should lead to automatic citizenship.

I always thought personally that if someone comes from another country and chooses to give their life for their new country, citizenship should be guaranteed. I mean, you're basically saying "Yes I'd willingly die for this country"...


Guess some don't get that though.

Been going on a long time. The San Patricios got the same deal in the Mexican-American War in 1848.
