I hope you're right. I suspect that our whole civilization is in deep danger and a couple of generations from now, institutions like Democracy could be gone to the dust bin. It's evolution/devolution time.
Valid point......and there seems to be a pendulum factor. ergo your evolution/ devolution dynamic . Could democracy survive in a world where most nations are authoritarian??... As a premise it might not be aggressive enough. It might have to morph intro something a bit different to survive.
Democracy requires that there be a healthy Middle Class but their jobs are all becoming automated and the sun is slowly setting on it.
The default governance structure of our species is Thugocracy and Serfdom.

Consider an old City of Toronto contract for re-roofing a portion of HISTORIC Casa Loma........................
a central roof area covered with ANCIENT clay tiles was leaking.................................
water damage increasing inside the building as the tiles aged and cracked and crumbled....................................
so the city set up a bidding process to get a new clay tile roof........................................
AND IT SOUNDS SIMPLE ENOUGH....................................
rip off and dispose of old tiles......................................
and put on new ones.....................................
but WHO would expect Silly Hall HOGS to ask: "how many of the old tiles do the roofing bidders THINK........................
are still in good enough condition that they..........................................
