Certainly. But it's not a military rank. It's tossed around to toy soldiers at all sorts of public and private institutions. Some of them become the real deal.
Does it count if I joined only to distance myself from my dad in the quickest way possible? I experienced a mental breakdown while in and so got a general discharge. I was physically healthier than the majority but cracked at the lack of privacy of barrack life. I passed basic training but was discharged not long before completing infantry training.
Since the military was hiring only for infantry at the time, I applied for that. At the interview I gave my holywood schpeel about wanting to serve my country and the recruiter bought it hook line and sinker even though I was actually a pacifist at the time and unsure if I could kill someone except in self defence.
While in baracks, I had to put up with heavy drinkers, womanizers, open racists, and admirers of the freemen. I'm sure that all contributed to my mental breakdown of living with them for so many months, though there were a few goods ones.
To be fair to the infantry, I might just have found myself with the wrong batch and am certainly not suggesting that they reflected the entire infantry.
Now are you suggesting that you cannot respect a person unless he joins the military? Why?
Of course I'm not suggesting that. I'm saying I'll respect the service of anyone who raised their right hands. That's not a promise I'll respect anything else about them.
Nor am I saying I respect only those who served. One can earn my respect in any number of ways. You, for example, have it for at least three reasons: your service, your honest attempts to take on the problems of society (most of which I find unworkable), and your open mind.
But I have little tolerance for those who never had what it took to get stuck in belittling the service of those who did.
Motivations are always complex and multi-faceted. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. It gets much better after basic training.
