maybe we've had this whole Keepers of the Earth thing wrong from the get-go in assuming that it referenced to hold and protect when the more accurate meaning was along the lines of acquiring, exploiting and keeping the cash.

The sewage from Victoria does not effect anything beyond a few feet from the outfall pipe. This has been studied and monitored by scientists from UVic and U of Washinton for decades.
The only reason a billion bucks is being spent on a treatment plant is because the whale-worshippers and other misguided do-gooders both here and in Seattle made a big fuss about it for many years. Its a billion dollar solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Victoria discharges about 130 million liters a day of screened sewage - over 99% water. That works out to about 12,800 tons a day, of which about 12,650 tons is water.

The unfortunate reality is that believing that the (negative) effects are localized to a few feet or limited distance from the outflow pipe is very short sighted.
The tides and currents will disperse these materials significant distances.

The above references Metro Vancouver, but the same mechanisms would be in play for the sewage released through the Victoria system.
The fines, small particulate and especially anything water soluble will travel all over depending on the active currents/tides and a small these materials (like heavy metals) will contaminate huge volumes of the water they are exposed to, no different than if a bbl of oil was released into those waters how it would contaminate hundreds of thousands or millions of liters of water.
Where the rift is it is a dead zone already and what is on the surface today is deep in the rock is it ever breaks the surface of the water.

The REALLY SAD aspect of this of this debate is that the same people who think an oil pipeline is an abomination will turn around and
IGNORE over fishing, deliberate destruction of fish spawning habitat, and then get into an airplane- the absolutely DIRTIEST WAY to
travel anyplace- to fly off to a climate change conference to discuss the destruction of the environment..........BY OTHER PEOPLE!!!!
Sewage discharge can travel a long way, but beyond 50 feet of the end of the pipe it is too diluted to cause any damage. Victoria's sewage eventually ends up out to the open sea. That is not the case for Vancouver.
So CaptainTrips would be HAPPY to tke a sip of that water 50 ft from the sewer outfall point since it is so diluted?????

And I do recall that New York City used to barge its garbage out to sea and dump it till the sludge built up enough it started washing back ont local beaches!!!!!
When it comes to discharging sewage into the ocean its all about location and volume. Victoria is a small city in the right location. Seattle used to discharge their sewage into Lake Washington and Puget Sound - both really bad places to dump anything. Now they shake their fingers at Victoria which is in a perfect location for discharging sewage.
Any way, the science is being ignored and a $billion is being spent for nothing. Some of it is federal money, so wherever you live in Canada you are getting screwed by this.
