Requiring ID is not too much to ask. I could see maybe allowing four types of ID to be scanned: passport, state ID card, driving license, or finger print. I'm sure most voters carry their fingers with them everywhere they go. Correct me if I'm wrong. The culture might be different in the US.
I'm sure a person who really cared to vote would make the effort to get the appropriate ID and maybe even have his fingers scanned so he could vote even if he lost his ID. That could be doubly good for crime investigations too. Massive finger-print database. If he doesn't want to give his fingerprints, then make sure he bring his other ID. More than reasonable.
