Has it really? I'm waiting for proof. Show me a previous decade that had the huge number of category 5 hurricanes the last two decades have had.


Last year was an abnormality. The 3-4 years before (despite dire predictions) had fewer than average. The thing some people forget is that each year is different. There is no set number of hurricanes or scales of hurricanes expected.

I've checked the historical record and also posted it prior to this discussion. The number of Category 5 storms in the last two decades far exceeds the average. Between 1828 and 1998 there were 22 Category 5 hurricanes, which works out to about one every three years. Between 2003 and 2017 there were 11 which is almost one a year. And we are only talking about hurricanes that actually hit the US. If you take into account typhoons and tropical cyclones (which is what hurricanes are called in the Pacific and Indian Ocean) the totals for the last couple of decades are even higher.
