Actually forestry , mining and more and more secondary manufacturing are fueling the British Columbia economy as much as tourism . Kamloops and the Okanogan are vibrant growing communities , granted tourism is a major part of their growth it is not all.The local economy in YVR is hollow.. Like you suggest, overly dependent on tourism and the biggest employer by far is the service sector.
You can't have any kind of life in that town as a guy pumping gas or slinging drinks unless you live 4 peeps to a 1.5 bedroom condo and that gets old super quick, even for an 18 y/o
