The US gets snubbed out of a lucrative free trade deal

Joining the TPP is good but not enough. Canada should sign the TPP and then go on to build CANZUK on top of that.

We compete directly against Australia and New Zealand for every morsel that we export. The Brits will just view us as an imperial possession and will not give you anything preferential. There is no CANZUK to be had other than a common cultural agreement. It's an illusion. Asia is where the action is, now and for the forseable future. The US is going down.

I agree that the TPP is where it's at. And I doubt very much that we compete on each and every single item without exception. We have maple syrup and they have Vegemite. Where we do compete, let's each exploit our respective strengths. Australia and New Zealand could focus on their regional markets and we on ours. Aside from maple syrup and Vegemite, there won't be much trade between us, granted; but free movement could still clear bureaucracy.

Aussies don't want us getting anywhere close their beef markets.

UK needs our lumber.

New Zealand REALLY wants free access to our dairy markets.

Canadian farmers can't compete with countries that don't have seasons. We have to grow and harvest forage to see our animals through our cold winters but in the South, they can graze their animals all year long (which costs a lot less).

So why not import our food then and specialize in what we do best? That way, food costs go down and our poor will benefit from that, no?
