A cake showing a life-sized horse dying and covered in barbed wire in a World War One trench has sparked an animal cruelty row before Remembrance Day.

The eight-foot structure depicts the injured beast with blood pouring from its limbs while surrounded by poppies - all of which is edible.

A cake showing a life-sized horse dying and covered in barbed wire in a World War One trench has sparked an animal cruelty row before Remembrance Day.

The eight-foot structure depicts the injured beast with blood pouring from its limbs while surrounded by poppies - all of which is edible.

Baker Emma Morris created the cake out of Rice Krispies and marshmallows as a final show-stopper in the Cake International exhibition at Birmingham's NEC last week.

It was made from 110 pounds of Rice Krispies, 110 pounds of marshmallows, 155 pounds of modeling paste and 155 pounds of sugar paste at her home in Aberdare, Wales.

But after posting images on social media of the shocking sculpture, inspired by a similar scene in 2011 film War Horse, Emma was slammed for creating a cake that is unnecessarily bloodthirsty, graphic or 'cruel'.

Joan De La Cruz said: 'This is just bl***y awful, we know what happened we don't need a bl***y cake to remind us thankyou, I really think it's sick.'

Another commenter, Dorene Combs, wrote: ' I would be too busy crying and choking to eat it. Very beautiful work but as a cake? Cake time is happy time in my opinion.'

Responding to the strong emotive reactions from those who saw the cake, mother-of-three Emma acknowledged that it is very graphic but said it was the reality of war and she wanted to capture that.

She said: 'I wanted to portray a bit of emotion and reality and to show what really happened to the horses in World War One, especially as it was going to be exhibited just before Remembrance Sunday.

Speaking about the stunning cake, Emma from Wales said: 'I think people in the US especially are upset by it as they don't really get the reference. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but I'm proud of what I have achieved'

'The best way to do this was to base it on War Horse and unfortunately a lot of horses suffered so I felt like I needed to show that properly.

'We had up real pictures of World War One behind the cake to show the relationship between the soldiers and the horses so that everyone understood the context.

'There were a lot of tears at the show when people saw it as a lot of people told me it was a great tribute.

'I achieved what I wanted to do. I wanted to create a piece that showed the respect we have for the people that fought for us and the horses that did too.

But several social media users came to Emma's defence during the row that erupted. Sarah Cameron Egan praised her work and wrote: 'I think it's a wonderfully recreated piece of a history and a tribute to those that succumbed to the perils of war'

'My main aim and message with the cake was that I wanted to remind people to never forget.

'I have read a lot of the comments on the pictures of the cake. I know it is quite graphic and it is horrible to think of animals in pain like this but it is the truth.

'I think people in the US especially are upset by it as they don't really get the reference. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but I'm proud of what I have achieved.

'I don't want to upset anyone and I know that the image of a horse stuck in barbed wire like this is upsetting but it is a true portrayal.

'I said I wanted to provoke a few tears, but just as an emotional piece to remember the soldiers and the animals that fought for us.

'Whatever people say about it being upsetting it is a tribute piece and it had to be as true to life as possible.

'There were some people who came to the show that often ride horses and they said I had managed to capture the sad eye, which I was very happy about.'

But several social media users came to Emma's defence during the row that erupted.

Sarah Cameron Egan praised her work and wrote: 'I think it's a wonderfully recreated piece of a history and a tribute to those that succumbed to the perils of war.

'It's unfortunate and it's not pretty, but war is both of those things. Well done on your work, the detail is superb. People are going to have their opinions on everything and you'll never please everyone. I think you nailed it.'

Karen Goodman added: 'You truly captured the awful way these horses lived and died along with the men that cared for them and died alongside. Well done! It's the most jaw dropping cake I've ever seen.'

Michelle Barner wrote: 'Incredible. You can almost see it pleading for you to help it, to cut the wire away, almost believe that it will get up if you do.

'There are few that can capture that in a painting, let alone a cake. Just incredible. I hope there's a way it can be preserved and kept, it's just too amazing to be disposed of or eaten.'

How Emma made her show-stopper cake out of Rice Krispies and marshmallows

'To create this cake, I had to do my research. I spent an afternoon with my friend's horse so that I could study them and see how they positioned themselves.

'I took plenty of pictures and it gave me an idea of the size of a horse.

'It is made of Rice Krispies and marshmallows. I use this because the cake isn't for eating it is simply for display and it is the strongest structure to make big cakes like this.

'I didn't find it too difficult to make. In my mind I can work it out while I'm going along.

'There were some problems putting it together. Gravity wants stuff to fall off and down. We have to bind it together a lot to make sure it all stays where it needs to be.

'Getting to the show was just horrendous. It was in my conservatory and I needed to get it into a van outside.

'I had to go around my garden and round my house. It took 12 of us to get it in the van and we all had to lift it at head height.

'The board had wheels on the bottom so once we got it to the venue it was fine.

'Coming home wasn't any easier as there was only six of us and I was seriously worried someone was going to hurt themselves trying to carry it.

'I'm now looking for a new home for the sculpture as if it is stored in the right conditions it will last for years.'

It's not a cake:

"Baker Emma Morris created the cake out of Rice Krispies and marshmallows as a final show-stopper in the Cake International exhibition at Birmingham's NEC last week."

But it is a very good sculpture.

I hate those 'cake' shows where people make things out of rice krispies and call them cakes. They aren't cakes, they're rice krispie scultures.
