Ontario election still wide open, pollster says

Next year’s provincial election is shaping up as a race that is too close to call, a new poll suggests.

The Campaign Research survey shows Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown’s long-held advantage is shrinking, Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne is a drag on her party, and Andrea Horwath remains personally more popular than her third-place New Democrats.

“Really, it’s anyone’s race; it’s that competitive,” Campaign Research CEO Eli Yufest said Friday.

The Tories are at 36 per cent, the Liberals are at 32 per cent, the NDP is at 25 per cent and the Greens, led by Mike Schreiner, are at 7 per cent.

Using an online panel of 1,347 Ontario voters, Campaign Research polled between Sunday and Wednesday. A probability sample of that size would have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points, 19 out of 20 times.

In last month’s tracking poll, the Tories were at 38 per cent, the Liberals 33 per cent, the NDP 23 per cent, and the Greens at 6 per cent.

“It’s not a significant difference (month over month), but it’s certainly, directionally, becoming closer,” said Yufest, adding the results suggest Ontario could be headed toward a minority government.

But it is unclear which leader would be at the helm.

I find it hard to believe that somebody who lies so much and is so corrupt can continue to have hopes of remaining premier. But we Ontarioans have been screwing the pooch provincially for the last several elections and I guess we get the liars and cheaters we deserve.

History repeats. The voters afraid of the slash and burn PCs will throw all their NDP votes to the Liberals.
Ms. Horwath is heads and above the other two leaders, unfortunately voters will not support an NDP Government.

The Conservatives attacked Labour laws protecting Unions last time they got elected.

Thats why Liberals still have a chance of getting elected

If i was a conservative leader, id make it very clear I wouldn’t attack any labour laws. That alone would make a big difference in their chances of success.

People are voting to protect their jobs, Since the day Harris attacked union laws.

The smart folks have already left Ontario and headed west. That's where the future is.

Well it was until the Energy East pipeline was sabotaged for Quebec votes, also the long term outlook for oil prices not favourable.

I predict Wynne will resign prior to election time.

Her excuse last week for Deb Mathews departure was that "She's a grandmother. She wants to spend more time with her grand children" . Well, that's a hood excuse for driving the most senior member of your cabinet away.

Wait! Wynne is a grandmother, too! (somehow) You need to send more time with your grandchildren because, who knows how much longer you have, Kathleen!

For the Liberal party, that's the sensible thing to do, and timing is everything. The election is next June. Campaigning will start in the new year. You want Wynne gone, so you can push the party and the new leader.

The liberals haven’t attacked labour laws, as promised. And have gotten elected several times even while making huge mistakes.

And Liberals will win again if the public believes Conservatives will attack labour laws again like Harris did.

I expected them to loose in both 2011 and 2013. For that reason I’m not counting them out. They should lose, but that doesn’t mean they will.

I predict Wynne will resign prior to election time.

I’d be surprised if she did. if She were going to leave before the election she should have done so by a year ago. Now we are too close to the election for them to get a new leader who can then manage the whole campaign.

Harris won two huge majorities.

And changed major labour laws in his second mandate, And the conservatives have never been elected ever since, and mostly because of that . And the NDP never got a second chance after bob Rae burnt the teachers very hard on their contract.

And this is why Liberals keep winning even with all the bullshit. As long as they dont screw the Unions they will remain in power.

Because people vote for their wallets on a provincial election.
