I’m very cynical about the term ‘Western values’ as no one can seem to agree exactly what they are. The fact of the matter is that Canada should no longer consider itself as part of the Western/European world, but rather the First Nations Indigenous people, from whom this country was stolen, should set the narrative and decide what Canada is and in what world it is part of. So that it should be that Canada is in fact closer to other Indigenous Amerindian countries like Peru, Mexico, Bolivia, etc., than it is to Britain, France or Europe.
As for criticizing religion, I think it’s not that difficult to distinguish between genuine academic criticism and hate speech that is targeting a particular ethnic, racial or religious community. The attacks and harassment of Muslims at our Mosques is definitely a manifest example of hatred and such behavior is nothing short of criminal. As for an Imam who preaches in a closed Mosque, that has nothing to do with the public. Of course it is not right to preach hatred and death to anyone, and anyone who is guilty of preaching violence and death must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
