Northern Ontario,
Anybody else have trouble with the last update????
My computer crashed last week after the update with no way to bring it out of a blinking start-up screen..... no restore point worked...recovery disk didn't work either..
So I bought a new one here in Mississauga, and the only thing I'll be able to save from the old one is the ram memory to double the one I purchased....
I'll do that when I get back home....

It's true that whatever yo do on a computer is recorded somewhere......

In the process o of the basic set-up of the new laptop, I had to log in to my Microsoft account...and when this thing finally booted up....
my desk-top background was the same as the old one...screensaver was the same etc....
Pity it couldn't come back with all my favorite programs......
Must be either Microsoft cloud or Acer cloud that did that did that.

I have Windows 10 and have had no problem with it for the year or so I have used it. I have noticed on my old Windows 7 laptop that it is too slow to update to Windows 10. Could that have been a problem with your old machine?

I think it's time to abandon Windows. I switched to Linux (the Mint distribution) rather than "upgrade" to Windows 10, everything I read about it indicated it's designed to be a massive invasion of privacy. There are ways to block Win10's spyware features, at least so far, but Microsoft may in future releases build it so deeply into the OS that you can't block it and have a functioning system. I don't want it, or any future versions of any Microsoft OS, on my home network, I think Microsoft has been co-opted by paranoid U.S. security agencies and has agreed to spy on everybody for them. I'm not playing. I also believe that when it comes to online security, paranoia is the only rational attitude.

If that is true, DO NOT open Facebook or Twitter accounts.

I had that issue with a Windows 7 update. Nothing appeared to work but eventually it came out of its funk and booted up. Looking to upgrade anyways but will likely avoid windows updates for a while,

I had no problems before either, it was running better than with windows eight.
Since it happened on the reboot....I figure a corrupt start up file.....It was a five year old machine
The new one seems to work alright...

I tried all the restore points , three of them in safe mode, all of them did it on the start up screen....

LOL, I am going to stick to win 7.1 for as long as possible. I have a nice little software doohickey that prevents anything from win 10 slyly downloading.

Linux is nice, but certain types of software have to be run on either Mac or Windows...

Yes, and for the few Windows things I need I have virtual machines.

You can block Windows' monitoring and reporting with this: https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/ It should be on any version from Win7 on if you value your privacy, Win10's spyware features were also pushed out as "important updates" for 7, 8, and 8.1.

I was due for a new computer anyway..
The old one had no second slot to expand the ram...I only gad 4 gigs in the old one.... this one will have 8 when I get home, and it only cost me $298.

Yup.

Airmiles.

There's another scam in which YOU are the product.

I use the cash miles component of Air Miles, which means that every time I spend money at places like Sobeys a few cents foes into my Air Miles account. Every now and then I get a discount at the till and it costs me nothing. I gave up on the Air Miles travel plan long ago.

In 2012 I bought a MacBook Pro for work. I had no problems with it because my work was not so hard and it was a great pleasure to do simple things on such a computer. Until now it passed 8 years. Recently I found a better jobs, but times harder than previous one. Besides that, this company is working only with Windows, so I needed to install it with the help of Bootcamp Assistant. The main problem were drivers. It was very hard to find drivers and drivers update software, but I was lucky to find a good website to downlaod them for free.

Quite late to answer this I suppose but Windows updates are really nasty and they disturb a lot. And while I had no major laptop work, I chose to go for a Chromebook and now I am happier. This is something from Asus and contains a mediatek processor. The best part is that all the updates in Chromebooks take place very silently without disturbing you. Also, I can run Android apps on it. Chromebooks are really awesome.
