So far that's the only thing Trump's managed to do effectively.

According to ability and need

Heavily implies the notion of assuming responsibility for ones self.... That is what's absent from today's contemporary mindset

Sure, if you want to see it that way. I see it more as assuming responsibility for the society from which you benefit, which ultimately would include responsibility for yourself in a kind of "golden rule" way.

If you recognize the fundamental truth that all human beings are dependent in some way on other human beings, you could realize that working to strengthen your society strengthens you. Contributing according to your ability is giving to your needs. I'm not sure if that's what you mean by heavily implying assuming responsibility for ones self.

Agreed... However...

The expression of socialism today in Western society operates in a manner that drags everyone down to the lowest common denominator rather than raise the lifestyle for all.

Success is punished by increasing the burden on those that risk more time, resources, cash and work as opposed to encouraging all to strive to their best ability. On the other hand, the needs reflect an increase based on the desires and perceived entitlements relative to the success of those that take those risks.

Sure sure, this reminds me of the time Angstrom claimed he had a formula to prove capitalism would save the world or some shit. 60 pages of spastic whining later and all he managed to do was accidentally agree to socialism.

Angstroms fortes lie in other realms. :)

Oh I can't claim credit for that, comrade.

Indeed.

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."

-- Karl Marx, 1875

"He who does not work shall not eat."

-- Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, 1917

I think we're beginning to see where our uber-capitalists are getting their principles.

I think old Karl hit the nail right on the head.................................as long as he's speaking of able bodied people who refuse to work! :) :)

People think of socialism and capitalism in black and white terms when you can have both in varying degrees.

Socialism is simply wealth redistribution.

Every once and a while capitalism leads to a stacked deck and you occasionally need to shuffle that deck.

Then you let capitalism do its thing for a while.

Wealth distribution , like stealing from Peter to pay Paul .

Of what?

I can give you a definition of socialism:

Definition of socialism
1
: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2
a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property
b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3
: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done

An example of 'worker ownership of the means of production'.

Using a present day scenario.

Seems that the operating question is : Can and Will Kelly turn this poorly managed ship into a functioning and efficient organization?? More important: Will the pitbull Trump allow him the latitude to do the job he gave him??

Any bets as to how long before Trump begins to undermine him via Twitter?? The Trumpster does not like to be challenged or "advised" what to do.

In Trump world if a staffer wants to know the status of his performance........he just has to follow Twitter.

Seriously folks: has there been as ugly a government since the middle ags?? What a throw back. and his followers just LOVE him. (in cult like style) If their Trump is their voice and this evolving new America is what they want ........should be interesting for the next while at least.;-)

Not only can you, but apparently you must. There has never been a purely capitalist or purely socialist society.

That's not correct. Socialism is worker ownership of the means of production.

Socialism is public schools, public libraries, and public highways. The workers don't have to own anything.

I wonder if ownership in this context is contributing tax money toward those services. That's the only way I can imagine the concept right now.

Anyway, I still believe that the more conventional way of thinking about socialism is redistributing wealth.

Simply having those public services is a way of redistributing wealth. The more direct way would be to raise taxes on one group and lower it on another.

I was originally responding to JLM on this, so I don't know how much of what JLM said you agree with. But can I assume by what you said above that you agree with the principle, with reservation.

Or do you believe that your reservations are enough to throw the whole idea away?

Socialism is simply wealth redistribution.

Capitalism is wealth redistribution.
