Stairs, on the other hand, aren't that bad. Been up and down a lot of government stairs. I'd avoid the stairs this guy built though. They looked rickety.

A student can stick around for that long too. Though he may take time off work, he might also raise a family, volunteer, etc. too.
You look at the stairs that idiot built and it's easy to see you will have to rebuild them every year. So 500$ for the next 50 years is 25000$ and you haven't included any labour cost in that.

And then you look at the cost of employing teachers and you realize, that if we had to pay people equally for the amount of work they do, the stairs should cost 150000$. Just to be fair and compensate for all of the hazards people will endure to build that staircase

Not sure how many tools teachers are required to buy themselves if any. What about transportation? They probably can live without if they wanted. Since there job is at the same place everyday

It all comes down to supply and demand. To become a teacher requires more qualifications. More qualifications means more time and money needed to acquire them. That limits access to the profession which consequently pushes prices up.
