Germany breaks renewables record with coal and nuclear power responsible for only 15% of country's total energy

Germany has broken a new record for renewable energy, with low-carbon sources nearly obliterating coal and nuclear power last weekend.

At one point on the sunny and breezy Sunday, sustainable energy from wind, solar, biomass and hydro power provided a record 85 per cent of the country’s total energy.

Germany has been investing heavily in renewables, as part of the government's Energiewende initiative to transition away from fossil fuels and nuclear power to a low carbon, environmentally sound, reliable, and affordable energy supply by 2050.

Investment in sustainable energy has been so successful that for several hours on Sunday electricity prices fell into negative figures, as renewable sources fed so much power into the grid that supply exceeded demand.

Coal use fell to an all-time low, with public broadcaster Deutsche Welle reporting that on 30 April coal-fired power stations were only operational between three and four in the afternoon and produced less than eight gigawatts of energy, well below their maximum output of about 50 gigawatts.

“Most of Germany's coal-fired power stations were not even operating on Sunday,” Patrick Graichen of Agora Energiewende told Australian news site RenewEconomy.

“Nuclear power sources, which are planned to be completely phased out by 2022, were also severely reduced.”

Mr Graichen added that days like Sunday would be “completely normal” by 2030 thanks to the government's continued investment in the Energiewende initiative.

Germany announced in May 2011 that it plans to shut down all its nuclear power plants by 2022, in addition to nearly eliminating fossil fuel power..

The country's ambitious energy transition aims for at least 80 per cent of all power to come from renewables by 2050, with intermediate targets of 35 to 40 percent share by 2025 and 55 to 60 percent by 2035.

Since Jan. 1, cap and trade has added 4.3 cents per litre to the price of gasoline and about $80 a year to natural gas home heating costs, in addition to indirect costs that will be passed onto consumers.

You mean indirect costs like oil company profits?

If oil companies want to buy or accept free carbon credits from the ON Govt Carbon Credit auctions or program and sell them for profit all while dinging the consumer for cost so be it. It keeps the gullible people like mentalfloss happy.

I just love the way corporate worshippers constantly shriek about how the cost of this or that regulation will "be passed on to consumers" like ALL costs aren't passed on to consumers. It's almost as funny as you pretending to disfavor oil company profits.

In Canada the big "Green Energy" producers are oil and pipeline companies.

Suncor and Enbridge.

Stuff like this.

Oil and Injuns working in Green harmony.

Suncor Energy Adelaide Wind Power Project

Suncor is committed to increasing renewable energy generation in Canada and building best-in-class wind energy projects.

Suncor Energy and Aamjiwnaang First Nation have partnered on the Adelaide Wind Power Project with Aamjiwnaang First Nation holding a 25% interest in the project.

In July 2011, the Project was awarded a 40 MW, 20-year term power purchase contract with the Ontario government. Our Adelaide Wind Power Project – located north of Strathroy, Ontario – received a Renewable Energy Approval from the Ministry of the Environment in December 2013. Suncor has been developing this project since signing the first agreement with a local landowner in 2008.

The Adelaide project is now in operation

Yes i do know what cap and trade is and that Europe has it while at the same time Germany doesn't have a carbon tax, yet.

So, you agree that Ontario is handling it right then, because they don't have a carbon tax.

Oil company profits. I expect you'd decry wind or solar profits as some sort of government cheat with your dying breath.

He likes to pretend oil subsidies don't exist.

There's more i also don't agree with. What do you mean "they"? Were from Ontario, us?, no. Germany? for the most part yes.

Most large emitters in Ontario are receiving allowances for free until 2020, which the government says is meant to prevent them from moving to jurisdictions without carbon pricing. But for now certain electricity importers, natural gas distributors and fuel suppliers are among those required to participate.

Bidders in the first auction included Union Gas, Enbridge Gas, Imperial Oil, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, the city of Kingston, Ont., the University of Guelph, Ontario Power Generation, Apotex, Labatt, BP Canada Energy Group, Shell Energy North America and Suncor Energy Products Partnership.

Flossy loves cash subsidies, hates tax credits.

ecoENERGY for Renewable Power
The ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program was launched in April 2007 to encourage the generation of electricity from renewable energy sources such as wind, low-impact hydro, biomass, photovoltaic and geothermal energy. Although no new contribution agreements have been signed after March 31, 2011, projects with contribution agreements receive a one cent per kilowatt-hour (kWh) incentive for eligible production during their first ten years of operation. The program itself will end on March 31, 2021.

As of March 31, 2011, 104 projects qualified for funding under the program representing investments of about $1.4 billion over 14 years and almost 4500 megawatts of renewable power capacity.

2 differences here;
- The additional cost is exclusively a gvt mandated cost, the gvt is simply using corps as the tax collector
- Those that vilify the eeeevvvvvviiiillll corps are the same ones that bitch that their bonus' from said corp isn't big enough or the welfare payments they receive aren't up to their high, high standard

Oil company profits. I expect you'd decry wind or solar profits as some sort of government cheat with your dying breath.

At present, there are few (if any) examples of wind/solar profits that exist without the bennie of a gvt handout

Which apparently isn't true of user fees, sales tax, excise tax, and for all I know, thumb tacks.

I always got the impression that some of the ones that vilify the evil corps are doing pretty well. I doubt Neil Young collects welfare payments. About as much as I doubt that all welfare recipients spend a lot of time whimpering about corporate profits.

The same could have been said about oil, coal, the railroads, the airlines, and the internet, to name but a few.
