First came the invasion of the giant ants from space! Ants are very social, and also use slave insects, except in the case of the giant space ants, they used humans!
Money disappeared. Those of us that were strong enough to continue living, were sent to work underground in massive ant farm complexes. They were scattered all over the earth. Rebel or become too sick to work and you were devoured on the spot by one of the worker ants.
People were naked, but considering the work that was done, humanity didn't look so bad in the all together. No more puffy, fat, sweaty humans sending out for two extra large pizzas and a six pack! The fat ones were eaten or died off quickly.
Where was I? Oh yes, there was a shooting in Paris earlier today, but no giant ants...yet!

The biggest difference is that there is a multi-year delay in when the gvt decides to act on the poll-du-jour.
Fact is, if those polls are/were conducted objectively (and properly) and represent issue(s) that are of significant concern, the gvt will act on them solely as a means to get elected/re-elected.
That said, to a degree, we are governing by polls.
NO, his job is to do what's best for the country and it's people. Not everyone else but. Unless of course he's not planning on getting re-elected.
For example, back when Mulroney was PM three quarters of the population were dead-set against the original FTA. Mulroney went against the will of the people and ultimately caused the destruction of the federal Progressive Conservatives. You can get away with ignoring a plurality, but when you ignore a clear majority in a matter the citizens feel is extremely important, you risk political suicide.
But the polls ARE calling on government to do what's right. People don't want their societies swamped by foreigners who don't speak the language and who have an entirely different view, often hostile, of how societies ought to be ordered. Guarding the border is what's right.
The polls have been pretty damned consistent for years. But why should government care if all political parties adhere to the same groupthink on things like immigration - which is the case in Canada. Since all political parties embrace open immigration, and the media almost unanimously supports open immigration, they need not fear what the people think or want or say.
Of course, since most political elections in Europe are done by proportional rep, that wound up giving rise to extreme right wing parties who WOULD do what the people wanted, just as it gave rise to Donald Trump in the US. No political party would do anything about an uncontrolled border, until he came along and he said he'd damn well do it. That was why he got elected.
