A searchable database of billions of dollars in stalled or cancelled resource projects

Resistance to infrastructure projects — whether they be pipelines, hydro dams, mines or wind turbines — has become commonplace in Canada. But it’s costing us. As part of a four-month investigation, the Financial Post identified as many as 35 projects, worth $129 billion, that have been stalled or cancelled due to opposition from environmental, aboriginal and/or community groups. To better understand the impact, we sent reporters to communities affected by activist opposition, and talked to experts on both sides of the debate about the origins, costs and necessity of activism.

have at 'er guys.

So many of those projects were so ill conceived or badly designed that they should never have seen the light of day in the first place (like the gas powered generation plant that they were going to build in the middle of a residential neighbourhood, right near us.)

Don't blame the NIMBYs so much as the arrogance of top-down, non-consultive planning.

Good news.

It was better that the money was spent elsewhere anyway.

That's the point of the article. The companies still got payed for the projects partially for cancelation fees. Business love it.

It's like being subsidized by activist.

This was floating around FB a couple of weeks ago. Mostly it provides proof that NIMBYs are destroying the economy and causing high unemployment and high taxes.

The uranium mine cancelled in northern Quebec would have been a safe operation. Our Atomic Energy commision even said so and they have a lot of smart people.

The Ring of Fire in Northern Ontario should have been put into production and it would have created ALOT of jobs in the north.

Mining in our country is villified to the point that its mostly lies and half truth when arguing against mining. And there is no reason for it.

Both of those projects will be dusted off and re-visited in the future, I'll bet. It's all a matter of need. Uranium deposits are rare and the one in Quebec will become steadily more valuable as time goes on. The Ring if Fire isn't dead yet.

That's because the chosen people don't need minerals, or oil or wood. They can live off borrowed money, rainbows and unicorn farts. Until their offspring find out who is going to pay the bill. Then see what happens to entitlements.

If they were smart, they'd invest in the mines.

This is a good series of articles that FP has been doing, Loc. Nice to see some media are interested in fair and balanced reporting.

Revisted im sure just not to the same extent.

Take the ROF for example, Cliffs Resources was going to build a chromium smelter in Sudbury which would have been a huge boost. It would have been perfect since Glencore future here is in doubt and KGHM main project is developing slower than guys walk on death row.

But instead they lost 100s of millions trying to get the ROF going. Garunteed now the next company who takes the reins will spend less because by then the existing infrastructure will be decommisioned and the provinces previous record will make anything beyond a mine and mill expasion a dream.

Who would want to invest in Canada where you loose 100s of millions of dollars on projects that never got close to collaring a shaft?
