They are a "Federal law enforcement agency". It's splitting hairs to say they aren't a police force. They just deal with federal crimes. I suppose the intelligence aspect of their operation is what sets them apart from traditional "police"

The investigate, collect evidence, arrest ... often while using arms.

There are so many intelligence organizations with overlapping responsibilities in the US, they probably spend a lot of their time spying on the other ones.

Anyway, police forces with the power to also spy are dangerous entities. The RCMP was eventually defanged after committing much abuse.

I don't believe that this was deliberate or politically motivated.

The FBI is just doing its job.

Fill in the blank. The FBI is _________________.

Are they not a police force of sorts? If not, they are ______________________.

Are they not federal, that is, national? If not, they are __________________________.
You don't understand the difference between "federal" and "national."

The Garda Siochana is a national police force. By Irish law, all police in Ireland, local, county, provincial, and national fall under the authority of the Gardai.

The Bundespolizei are a national police force. By German law, for example, the Munich city cops are Bundespolizei, as is every cop in Germany. They ultimately answer to the commander of the Bundespolizei and Kanzlerin Merkel, not to the mayor of Munich.

The RCMP, oddly, is not. The structure of policing in Canada allows each province to establish its policing policy. All but Quebec and Ontario choose to contract the RCMP to provide provincial policing. But they don't have to, as the OPP and Surete Quebec demonstrate.

There is no national police force in the United States. If there is a dominant legal model for policing structure, it is the State. Each state legislature has the power to authorize subordinate jurisdictions (counties, cities, townships) to organize police forces, but they don't have to. The Congress has no power to bring policing under a single, national structure. Director Comey of the FBI has absolutely no authority whatever over the part-time marshal of Left Buttock, Montana or an officer in the NYPD.

Hope that helps.

The Weiner scoundrel's escapades have been public for a long time If Clinton had any sense she would have distanced herself from any connections to him long ago. She clearly hasn't given any thought to keeping herself above reproach or even the appearance of it. That's what happens when someone thinks she is smarter than everybody else.

It is still a police force and it has a nation-wide reach.

The FBI isn't a police force. It's a bureau. That's what the B stands for.

Don't you know the difference between a police force and a bureau?

This is a police force:

This is a bureau:

Wait.. that's a biro... **** why is this so difficult?

Which doesn't make it a national police force. I can name half a dozen such "national police" off the top of my head. The U.S. Marshals Service. The DEA. BATF. CBP. TSA. The Secret Service. Are these national police?

You sure live in a police state, doncha?

The FBI is an investigations unit.

I'm pretty sure they still have their own force on the field but the main purpose is investigating things, even if they are petty, meaningless things like these emails.

If the Democrats had any sense they would have distanced themselves from Clinton but they didn't because for whatever disgusting reasons they are all owned.

Poor Wiener, I know it must be 'hard, but he needs to just plunge in and rise to the occasion'. He's been presented with an opportunity here; Trump and his supporter must love him right now, he needs to throw his support behind the GOP, might be his last chance to stay afloat. Caution required though, no one should open his emails, never know what's in there, yikes !!
