Canada adds jobs and unemployment rate drops, but Alberta’s woes continue
OTTAWA — A surge in public-sector jobs delivered a boost to Canada's labour market last month and helped drop the national unemployment rate to 6.9 per cent — its lowest level since last July.
Statistics Canada's latest labour force survey says the country gained 13,800 jobs in May, including 30,200 public-sector positions — offsetting weakness in Alberta.
The data also showed that Alberta continued to struggle as a massive wildfire forced production shutdowns in its economically critical oilsands region and triggered the evacuation of Fort McMurray in May.
The Statcan report says Alberta's unemployment rate soared to 7.8 per cent last month from 7.2 per cent in April, following the loss of 24,100 jobs across several industries — led by a big decline in the resources sector.
Statistics Canada also says the total number of hours worked in Alberta decreased 5.1 per cent — the largest monthly decline in 30 years.
The labour data surpassed expectations of a consensus of economists, who had predicted the country to add 3,800 jobs and for the unemployment rate to stay at 7.1 per cent, according to Thomson Reuters.

A 4 lane highway creates a bigger scar than a pipeline.
Another pipeline is a waste of resources though isn't it?
