Alberta crude struggles to reach refineries swamped with foreign oil

Canadian imports of foreign crude are soaring, swamping refineries in Quebec and New Brunswick, while efforts to connect the plants with Alberta supplies encounter fresh roadblocks.

The National Energy Board said Canadian crude oil imports leaped by 16 per cent last year to 736,000 barrels a day, including growing supplies from U.S. shale producers and OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia.

From less than 100,000 barrels a day as recently as five years ago, imports of U.S. crude surged to more than 400,000 barrels a day in 2015. They now account for 62.4 per cent of total Canadian imports, the energy watchdog said.

Led by Saudi Arabia, members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries have also increased their share of the Canadian market.

Saudi imports are up sharply and now comprise 11.4 per cent of the total, while Nigeria’s market share nearly tripled last year to 5.2 per cent, according to the federal agency.

The upsurge underscores the dramatic upheaval that has rocked global oil markets since mid-2014, cutting U.S. and international prices by roughly 70 per cent and throwing growth prospects of major energy producers into neutral.

Those refineries in New Brunswick and Quebec have always been swamped with 100% foreign oil from the day that they were opened. Alberta oil does not/has not ever made it farther east than Manitoba ... maybe a bit of it West of the Lakehead. Nothing new, here.

Then again, with all of those Western separatists who wish that we should freeze in the dark, maybe we should stick with a more politically reliable source, such as the Persian Gulf or Venezuela.

If it was a free market, everyone would have access to it, right?

Might want to mention that to your ecoterrorist buddies and leftsrded politicians in Ontario and Quebec in that oppose Energy East. OTH history has told us that TrudOWEs cannot be trusted with western assets.

I can hardly wait for the pissing and moaning about oil being "our resource" when oil gets North of $70.

If the boats stop coming who is going to suffer, the East or the West?

If the boats from Saudi Arabia or Venezuela stop coming,
then Eastern Canada will pipe it up from the USA, or
train car it up through Lac Magentic 'cuz that's a tried
and proven great idea instead of a pipeline coming from
Western Canada, who would send a significant portion of
the profit from that back into Eastern Canada anyway....

It see a huge business opportunity in marketing hockey helmets (for non-hockey use) to the gullible.

Betcha that we can even get Trudeau to pass legislation to force the issue... We can call it Waldo's Law

You should try some Yoga, just ask your local grocer what isle to find it in.

Make up your ummm, ummm, your uhhhh, ummmmm mind.
Having trouble making up your mind is one of the hazards of giving people a piece of your mind for decades on end.

Lesson learned is never post anything in your general direction and expect a reply that isn't straight from fantasy-land.

It won't make any difference if there is no pipeline or if a sovereign Brita wants to punish Ontario for eight years of transfer payments.

If the "boats" stop coming to New Brunswick, you can be damned sure that they have stopped coming to New Jersey, as well and everyone is going to suffer because it would take a planetary war for that to happen.
