...look what happened to some of the Russian juniors who got all of their junior playing in
Canada, then were drafted onto an nhl team, stayed around in n. America for awhile, then wanted
to go home, after the Canadian junior organization spent all that time working with them, saw
them thru the draft, only to see them walk away a few years later, doesn't make sense.
Well that's business too each player becomes their own little business and Why Not they paid the price in both cash & time and after afterward are completely free to do what they want.

The system always produces more players than the NHL can use some are left by the wayside some are injured some are burned out and that's life.

seems like there is less NHL talk this year compared to past years

NYI > NYR 3-1

a wild game with the Brooklyn crowd going crazy at every minute - Butch Goring commented on the rabid enthusiasm of the crowd and said that it is the historic rivalry and the proximity of these rival teams that brings out the best in the teams and in the fans - he said NHL should play far more regional games as this is what the fans want - something I have said for many years

People have mentioned that as one reason to put a team in Seattle and I can see it working here-have the teams travel by train for a change once in a while that would be something different.

There's a lot about it that makes sense. Easier on the players, reduces the cost of overhead.

In all my years of living in Gopherland, I still have never developed any interest in Midwestern hockey. I only watch the East Coast teams, principally, the NYC Metro teams with their great historical and highly intense rivalries.

it would be a shame to fracture the nhl so that only regional teams played each other, it isn't

the way of the league, the u.s. and Canada geographically is huge, and the success of bringing

all of these regions together to play as one, was no small feat, and someone like myself and many

whom I have known all of my life through hockey have knowledge of the whole league, follow the whole

league, even though they have their own division at home. that is the amazing thing about the nhl,

the vast togetherness of fans, at least the ones who came out of the 6 team league and continued to

learn, expand and follow each and every team and division that followed. there are rivalries in many different

areas who have just as much heart and passion as any other, and here on the west coast, I have seen it

and followed that passion for many many years. I'm very glad that this year each and every team has to

play at least one home and home game with the other conference, that is the way it should be.

no, this forum doesn't have much interest in sports/hockey, but there are many
that do, I follow a big forum now that has many posters who follow the nhl, all divisions, when I posted here, most of the time I was talking to myself, and a
couple of other posters sometimes, not often.

Buffalo > NY Riveters 6-5 OT

the chat room I was in during the game all agreed the game was badly officiated - even the Buffalo fans agreed - refs are so thin skinned that they disqualified two NY players for arguing over a bad call

I want this new league to succeed but it won't if the officiating is so lousy.
Hopefully, they will be on national tv soon so that interest in the league can be widely expanded.

Those stats are a parade to the penalty box.

I would normally agree with your assessment. But after having watched four league games, I can readily attest to the fact that the officiating has been awful. At times, the refs have made quick whistles that stifled good rallies by one team. At other times, they missed a blatant foul or imposed a penalty where a whistle was not warranted.

I have suggested that the game should have only one ref with two linesmen. This should speed up the game with fewer unneeded calls or stoppages. By the way, I thought the playing has been quite good. Be nice if the womens hockey expanded by having a Central League (say, Twin Cities, Chicago, Milwaukee/Green Bay, Fargo or Des Moines). With good marketing it can work.

the last three games for canucks were amazing, never saw a team get so many shots
against them in each one, and they won 2 and got 1 point in the 3rd, amazing indeed.

they did so much defending, that I'm sure their defense skills must be much improved
after the 3rd game, sort of like being at a defense school for 3 games.

and goalies were awesome in all 3 games, gave them the chance to win.

I was going to say "good defense" but you beat me to it. :)

well jlm, if you read my post again, I did not say the defense was good, not at all, I said
after the 3 games, they did so much defending, that they must have improved.

the point is, they defended all game long, in all 3 games, that has to do something to bring
up the level of play for defenders, and that isn't just defencemen, its all defense by all
players.

that is much different, as the defense has not been good enough, hence, getting run over big time
in all three games.

if they had of defended well, they wouldn't have had so many shots against them,
period.

but hopefully after all of this defending, they have learned something about
defending better, for the next game, and the next, and the next.

Well not to get into semantics too much I think their defense was good enough to keep them "in" those three games. :)

Well not to get into semantics too much I think their defense was good enough to keep them "in" those three games. :)

the only defense that was good enough to defend the whole team was the goalkeeping.
the goalkeeping was outstanding, brilliant, both by markstrom, then two games by miller,
they singlehandedly won those games, and must add the bit of luck as well, as I saw the
puck sail by miller and markstrom on many occasions, barely mssing the openside, and quite
a few posts and crossbar hits, in all the games, it was really quite amazing, it was many many years ago
that a team had over 40 shots against 3 straight games.

if you listen to the chit chat by the hockey analysts, they are all talking about these amazing 3
games by these goalies.

the games have to be analyzed as they were played, what the canucks did was try very hard, but the
team is lacking in too many areas right now, and we all understand their situation, they are in
the middle of transition, its still going to be another year or two before the team has completed
eliminating players, bringing in more youth, the present youth getting stronger and better, as
horvat is doing this year, although he also had quite a setback first half, but now he is bursting
forward, that is the truth about the team, not my opinion, just listen to benning, linden and Desjardin
when they are interviewed, they explain what is happening, it is obvious, there are players who are
just fill ins for the present till others can move up, and come onto the team to take their places.
if these two goalies can hold the fort like they did recently, they can steal some games.
the big victory this season is to make the playoffs, but they will need other teams
in the division to flounder and struggle.

Bobby Ryan's goal scores Ottawa boys a puppy

OTTAWA - After years of lobbying their parents for a dog, the Jansen brothers finally had their mom on board: Their dad, Warren, was the only holdout.

On Sunday morning, 10-year-old Cole approached his father with a question about his bottom line.

“Dad, what’s it going to take?” he demanded.

Impressed by his son’s forthright approach, but still convinced that he’d be left holding the bag for the dog’s care, Warren Jansen looked for a reprieve. So he offered his son a deal: If Bobby Ryan scored in the Senators’ game against the New York Rangers that afternoon, he would get the dog.

“But if not,” Warren Jansen told his son, “you leave me alone about it.”

What happened next became an Internet sensation. The boys, Cole and his brother, Reece, 7, went to the rink with a sign, informing Ryan of what was at stake: “Bobby, Dad said if you score, we get a puppy!”

It was a tall order because Ryan was facing the Rangers and their notoriously stingy goaltender, Henrik Lundqvist. But late in the second period, Ryan potted a rebound on a mad scramble in front of the Rangers’ net.

The boys went wild while dad staggered into the aisle in disbelief. But he has vowed to live up to his side of the bargain, and the family is now trying to decide between a Pomsky — a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian — and a rescue dog.

One thing they do know for sure is what they’ll name their new pet: Bobby.

After the game, Ryan told reporters that he was happy he could assist the Jansen boys in their quest for a dog.

“I saw the dad’s face when they announced the goal and he wasn’t too impressed, but the kids were, and that’s all that matters,” he said. “If they want a rescue (dog), I’ll rescue one for them.”

The Jansen boys heard Ryan’s offer and the family has since been in contact with the Senators Foundation, which has helped to raise money on behalf of Sit With Me, a dog rescue and adoption organization in Ottawa.

“The boys heard that, and whatever Bobby says, they’re going to agree with,” Jansen said. “He’s their favourite player times 10 … I should have known better. He’s been on such a hot streak that the odds were not in my favour.”

Ryan, who has scored in four of the past five games, even gave the boys a signed stick after being named one of the game’s three stars.

“They were like, ‘Oh, my God, who gets to sleep with the stick?’ And they both did. We got up this morning, and the boys were in the same bed with the stick. It was pretty cute.”

Ironically, it was only because Cole’s atom hockey team lost a heartbreaker in the quarterfinals of a weekend tournament (2-1) that the whole family was in a position to go the game together. “It’s amazing how it all fell together like that,” Jansen said.
