Well it's true that this plays into Harper's populism just like the other issues.

It plays into reality. The CBC (at least on the TV side) has been irrelevant for a number of years now. Other than HNIC, I can't remember the last time I watched it. I doubt my kids could name one program on it.

a huge chunk of canada is BUSH ( I know I know its hard to imagine, something without pixels )
and to a lot of old timers TV is just a new fangled catalogue that makes noise, and can't double in the outhouse.Even the papers just leave another kind of crap on your butt when the ink wears off.

CBC radio, while gutted by budget cuts over the years, ( by polititions that are a sceerd of it) is still the only real alternative to commercial fluff
did i say fluff
ooops, sorry
i meant crap

The CBC needs to be split into 2 entities.

1 - an agent of necessary services such as the weather alert radio, international shortwave broadcast service to reach Canadian and non canadians world wide, a news network, etc. These are services that don't necessarily have a viable business model, but are required.

2 - a broadcaster with the same funding, and accountability as CTV, and Global, etc. It would be sink or swim for these guys.

Marco Dube, the interim VP for Strategy & Public affairs at the CBC Radio Canada, explains the CBC's decision to not broadcast the Munk Debate:
We don't broadcast content, like a debate, over which we have no editorial input. We do news coverage, though.
Parse that one at length if you will.

'nuff said about these arrogant pricks.

Do tell, why are the private stations not having the same problem? Could it be that CBC simply is not showing what people want to watch but what the Toronto leftys deem appropriate viewing for the rest of the country? It is not like we are stuck with one or two channels anymore. And then there is CBC radio that is irrelevant in two languages that can't even get any advertisers.

That's the second time that you have posed this question.... Just the sound of crickets chirping is the only response from the usual suspects

Yes, we duly note your inner Hitler squeaked out there.

That line of thinking is a conservative staple after all.

Didn't take too long for ya to flag someone as a Nazi for the simple sin of not agreeing with you.

... And weren't you moaning about developing more 'democracy' for Canada in another thread?.... How ironic

Maybe it's just a silly question. Even folks like me who aren't big fans of the CBC understand that they have a different purpose than private broadcasters. Obviously, if the goal is different, the means of achieving the goal are most likely different.

Correct, it is just a silly question

Looks like you're learning. The goal of private broadcasters is to make money. Every decision they make is with that end goal in mind. Since no party in power has ever given that goal to the CBC, expecting then to mirror the private sector would make no sense.

Typical conbot judging quality based on ratings.

And that's aside from the fact that you proved the point that there was a drop because of lack of resources.

How would you judge the quality and who is judging? If the government is funding, should they not be the one judging?

If Canadians were judging, they would watch and ratings wouldn't be low.
