Christine Flynn, 31, said she was buckled in and waiting for Porter Airlines Flight 121 from New York to Toronto to take off early on Monday morning when an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man approached.

"He came down the aisle, he didn't actually look at me ... or make eye contact. He turned to the gentleman across the aisle and said, 'Change.'"

Flynn said she was confused at first, wondering why the man was speaking to the other passenger and gesturing towards her. Then it dawned on her that he did not want to sit next to a woman, she said.

"I was taken aback," said Flynn.

"At no point did he make eye contact with me," Flynn said.

Finally, she said, a flight attendant approached and asked if there was a problem.

I said, 'This man is refusing to sit next to me because I am a woman.' At that point, another man behind ... offered to switch with me and the airline attendant said, 'Would you be willing to move? and I said, 'Absolutely not. This is ridiculous,'" she said. "I was without words."

Eventually the man was seated next to another male passenger and the flight departed.

Flynn says she's frustrated she was asked to move and upset others on the flight were willing to help the man.

"I have a problem with that. He [the flight attendant] probably, maybe, didn't realize that asking a woman to move because the fact she had a uterus made the man next to her uncomfortable ... I don't think he even would have put it together that that's kind of insulting and maybe even discriminatory," she said.

"If someone had refused to sit next to me because I was gay and maybe they were some kind of old-school religion that doesn't like gay people no one would have switched with him. It would have been off the table," she said.

Porter Airlines spokesman Brad Cicero confirmed that the situation occurred but said the flight attendant "did his best to manage the situation as efficiently and reasonably as possible in order to avoid an unnecessary delay."

Flynn said she hopes to hear from the airline.

"I'd like an apology. There really should be a policy around this. If people are going to get on flights and demand that they sit next to someone of the same sex, there should be an area where they can go," Flynn said. "I should not have to move because someone has a problem with my uterus."

I wouldn't have done it. I'd have said too bad, he can move.

If the guy had said his religious beliefs he can't sit next to a black person...well nobody would have accommodated him.

If for religious or racial grounds or gender grounds then he doesn't want to fly
that day. The should have just removed him from the plane for mischief.
Religious freedom is one thing this one is a case of religious abuse and should
be singled out.

If, for any reason (religious or otherwise), you are that particular about seating arrangements.....maybe you should make all appropriate arrangements when you book your flight? Maybe?

I wouldn't have moved but not because of some principle against his beliefs. Honestly, if his religion tells him he can't sit beside me on a flight, well that's his loss. But to come up, turn his back, state (not ask, but state) "change".....yeah, fukker was rude. Screw him, he wouldn't get my assistance.

They could have offered him a giant plastic bag...

I'd tell him to charter his own f**king plane and he can sit where he likes!

Our usual crowd of Muslim haters is strangely silent. . .

Except for Waltard, who approves of sex discrimination when it's not Muslims doing it.

I feel sorry for the flight attendant. Having to intervene between two ignorant people.

Likely just part of a normal day for them. There's at least one a$$hole in every crowd.

I can sympathize with Walter- we have seniors' moments. :) :)

What's wrong with him just wearing a bursa with gloves? No contact.

He could even have one with the mesh covered opening at the eyes so that they couldn't even accidentally make eye contact.

just love this. The only a$$holes I see are all of you that are condemning the man, including the useless broad that files the fu cking complaint. What a whiny bitch. Did the guy say that the bitch wasn't allowed to sit beside ANY man? No. He didn't force his beliefs on anyone else. However, I see a lot of you pieces of crap wanting to force YOUR beliefs on him.

The solution was simple and the attendant handled it well. He asked her if she would move, she said no. No problem, that is her right. They didn't force her to move. They asked anyone else and someone else volunteered. Problem solved.

Oh, I'm not. I've gotten used to the useless, ignorant, condescending, hypocritical, garbage that posts here.

This thread is a prime example of the ignorance and hypocrisy. How dare he talk to me like that. How dare he tell me what I can and can't do. Who does he think he is? He should/needs to...... Insert where you all tell him what he can and can't do and where he can and can't do it.

The enlightened ones. What a joke.

I see it a little differently from what I've read. There was no problem until the religious fanatic showed up. The woman didn't think she should move which I'd say is her right - she may have even requested that particular seat for a reason. If the guy was going to be picky about who he sits with, it was up to him to make that clear when he bought his ticket.

So, your point is that she should go to the effort of leaving the seat assigned to her to satisfy his bigotry?

Where do you think she should have moved? Back of the bus?
