But politicians aside, a lot of people genuinely changed their minds very recently, and they shouldn't be shunned for it. At least they became allies in the end. It shows how necessary and effective the struggle truly is.

allies my a$$..... they jumped on the bandwagon......when things became easier and less work to support SSM, they supported SSM. If the wind was to blow the other way, those same people you are now defending, would jump right back off the wagon.

I still fail to see how this can be sooo important to people who aren't gay....................

Stopping discrimination should be important to everybody, the same way that freedom of expression should be important to everyone, and freedom to hold, or not hold, beliefs should be important to everyone.

Don't let pseudo-intellectual over analysis detract from that. Or super special interest groups using things to springboard their own causes. Or whatever the cause du jour is. It's important.

I'm not gay and it's important to me.

Ya well... you know the saying..... "if they had half a brain they'd be dangerous"? Well, she has half a brain.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Meh, non issue.

Actually, I think she's pretty bright. Despite being a verbose, pretentious twat.

Ah, or maybe they supported it not when it became easier but when it became harder not to. But that feeds into my point about the importance of the fight. Activists do the hard work and convince people to change their minds. Not everyone can be expected to participate in every movement or deeply consider all issues, but eventually, as in this case, it might pay off. We might be suspicious at how solid the support base is. We'll have to wait and see. For almost every belief you hold there is a point in time when you didn't believe it and when you just started believing. If you meet someone who has just changed their mind on something, you should welcome them. Don't make them think they've made the wrong decision.

Umm. . . that's what "allies" means. It don't mean "brothers and true believers down to the bone." It means "willing to work with me on this problem, now."

Kinda like the Soviet Union in WWII.

Northern Ontario,
My idea of helping gays was giving the man a hand with work when he needed it on the job, and recommending a gay businessman to a friend when he need parts for his car.....ect..........not paying lip service in a forum......

In the LGBT rights movement allies are people who support the cause but are not LGBT. When I said 'allies' I meant it both those ways. (pretty deep, man)

I agree, she sounds just like you.

I thought it was hilarious that so many people in one very large country have no clue about what goes on in the rest of the world, but they're happy to move to it thinking it'll get em out of the jam their country is supposedly in.

sometimes people (not all, but some) read something that goes right to their heart, soul, core. Maybe some people remember this poem.

According to the religious right everyone is now about to be forced to marry a gay. Worse they will now be forced to produce gay offspring. That will destroy society as we know it.

I love change. Can I keep my husband too? OMG! I could start my own hippy dippy pot smoking commune!!!!!
