The hijab and the burka should be banned. They should have no place in Western society.

the burka should be banned, the hijab is a head covering, you can clearly see their face

Muslim women are often forced to wear the burka and the hijab by their menfolk - their fathers, husbands, brothers, uncles - as a symbol of women's lowly place in Islam (we all know what Islam thinks of women). Women are often beaten for not wearing the burka or hijab.
unfortunately this part can be true

Muslim countries themselves, like Tunisia (since 1981, lifted in 2011) and Turkey (since 1997), have banned the hijab in public schools and universities or government buildings.

The hijab has been banned in France since way back in 2004.

In many Muslim countries, the only women who wear the hijab are those in poor rural areas. Muslim countries like Egypt and The Gambia prefer women to not wear the hijab. And yet here are the PC Brigade in the modern PC West telling women they can wear the hijab, even though many Muslim countries themselves are telling women NOT to wear it as even that is seen as appressive.

What business is it of yours or anybody else's if somebody chooses to cover her or his face?
same as blacks being owned and wearing chains, no different

it is our duty to speak out and end this

because they are forced to do so, until ISIS and other terrorists overran their countries, many women were doing just fine within the Muslim culture, they wore hijabs to demonstrate their having found allah, or NOT, they were doctors, they were lawyers, they could drive, they could work

then tyranny

many of these terrorists are extremely young, stupid and power hungry

they stand on a corner with metal sticks and whack your f*cking ankles as hard as they can if your burka is too short and don't even think of leaving the house without it

they can't breath under there, it's stifling

you try walking down the street in 90° humid weather while wearing a burka, you try it, you can't see even where the curbs are, and under all of that you have your regular dress and then buddy has his shirt off walking beside you because it's so hot...

it's a sign of slavery, hell it is slavery

there is no choice when there is only ignorance and fear

I know...but in our enlightenment we tolerate it

there are many many muslim women fighting for their rights...but they have to do it, we can only support them

Too late for me. A red from wally for saying the lady and her hijab looked "neat"

WHEN will I learn !!

I gave ya a greeenie to balance ya out...:p

Oh, OK. That part I agree with. Just not with banning the hijab or burqa. In Algeria, many women have taken to wearing hijab voluntarily, because it provides them with some protection from douchebags, which appears to be a majority of the young male Algerian population.

But, then it's not voluntary

I think they need to get away from this "treat women like sh!t thing" Can't see it happening any time soon.

yeah I'm pretty rabid on the topic because of the circumstances of the women

I know one Muslim woman who never used to wear a hijab she does now because she has found Allah, her husband couldn't care less if she wears it or not so that is choice

when I was young I had to cover my head when I went to mass, that changed as the church evolved that is choice

in my working life I worked with Jews, many of the orthodox women shaved their heads and wore wigs...that wasn't a choice either until recently funnily enough, their daughters chose not to carry that tradition forward and they were okay with that

I used to go to hairstylist who is Muslim, he would never let his daughter be subjected to having to wear a hijab because a man told her...a burka he views as slavery too. We had many conversations over the years about the irony of him styling women's hair when many in his culture thought it must be covered in public

it depends upon the mind set

it has to be choice

there is no choice when you can't chose due to ignorance or fear

Yes, actually it is.

Bingo. On both counts.
I've been thinking about this one, if I have to wear a burka or a hijab in order to protect myself how is that voluntary?

if I can't wear a skirt walking down the street because it's viewed as an invitation to rape and thus for my own safety I choose not to wear it, that really isn't a free choice it's a choice of necessity which is not choice at all, no?

You don't have to. You can always put up with the douchebags.

If we're going to define anything that you do to facilitate your daily life "forced," then you're "forced" to get up in the morning, "forced" to go to work, "forced" to wear particular clothes, "forced" to talk to people a certain way.

Nobody has complete freedom to do as she wishes at all times. All "freedom" is merely a set of choices, that set being less than all possible choices. Maximising the set of choices is a good thing, provided it doesn't reduce other people's sets of choices.

Life sucks. But if you're going to call every choice a result of coercion, then living in a society of any sort is pretty much coercion 24/7.

I was leaning toward the ideal because I view her set of choices as being limited by narrowness and fear of well, basically death in some instances, mental or physical abuse if she is lucky, but in the purest sense you are right. I would not walk down a dark ally in the middle of the night because common sense would dictate that it could be unsafe.

But how do we then in a free society accept the burka when it is chaining some to the will of others.

The hijab should be banned and so should the burka. The Belgians and French and other European countries have done it, with many women's rights groups applauding it, so I don't see why Britain can't follow suit.

The hijab does not cover the face, it is simply a hair covering........to ban it would be ridiculous.

The Burka is an entirely different matter.

I think that we feel it's our business when we are worried that it is not the woman's choice to wear it. But that she is pressured through intimidation and physical violence.

I'd buy and wear that lovely head scarf the model is wearing. It looks very much like the 1940's rosie the riveter head scarf.

So make it illegal to force somebody to wear what they don't want to wear, and enforce that law.

Then it becomes the responsibility of every woman and girl to say "No, daddy (hubby), I'm not going to wear that stupid thing. You can have your daughter (wife) with a bare head, or you can have your daughter (ex-wife) out of your life. Your choice. And if you hit me, you're going to jail. Also your choice."

Religious freedoms...can't make it illegal.

You also can't expect a person who has been raised to be submissive and who believes their entire afterlife is dependant on that submission to suddenly stand up straight and become independant of all that? You expect these men who've been brought up to believe in their "perceived" superiority to suddenly just back down?

If that were possible then we'd have no women's shelters.

I wish it were easy like that. But as you well know, the threat of eternal damnation makes people horrible to each other.
