The target was the home of the leader of the Hamas Military.. I'm pretty sure, they figured he was suppose to be at home, when the rang his door bell.
As far as the wife a child, casualties of war. For one, If I was that Hamas leader and my home and family could be a target, my family would be in France. But that is just me, Islamic ideology places a very low value on women in their society.
