JLM, this vividly illustrates the difference between a liberal (me) and a conservative (you). Basically what you are saying is that you won’t support a tax increase under any circumstances.

Because you know and I know that the precondition you put up before you will support tax increases is never going to be met. There will never be equality between MPs pension and civil servants’ pension.

So in effect what you are saying is that if it is the choice between running a deficit and increasing taxes, you would rather run a deficit. Indeed, that is the position that has been taken by most conservative leaders in recent memory. Rather than increase taxes, they racked up huge deficits. Both the Bush’s, Mulroney, Reagan, Mike Harris etc.

As a liberal, I have no problem with a tax increase if it is clearly earmarked for reducing and getting rid of the deficit. That is what McGuinty did and I supported it from the very beginning. If he had frittered away the tax increase, not used it to get rid of the deficit, he would have lost my support. However, he did succeed in getting rid of the 6 billion $ Mike Harris deficit.

As a liberal, I have no problem in supporting tax increases, provided they are clearly earmarked for the elimination of the deficit.

WRONG, I'm not a conservative or liberal or any other political animal. It's the person running the show. NO I didn't say I'd rather run a deficit than increase taxes, what I did say was I'm not for increasing taxes to support waste. It's very presumptuous of you to designate me politically.
30 years ago I was N.D.P. - now I'm nothing politically.

Yep, and the views of a lot of people who don't consider themselves as political animals. N.D.P. in B.C. would definitely welcome me today- they need every vote they can get and will accept it no matter what my beliefs are. N.D.P. in B.C. wants to increase minimum wage. They don't seem to realize (or care) about where the money is to come from. Any moron can see that if McDonalds were to raise the minimum wage the price of hamburgers is going to increase, and people traditionally have eaten at McDonalds solely for the cheap prices (it certainly wasn't for the atmosphere or service)- So what do you think is going to happen, especially in these tough economic times? It's a no brainer that McDonalds will be losing customers Or else people are going to have less money in their pockets to shop elsewhere. I THINK YOU'LL FIND THAT IT'S GREED THAT WILL BRING DOWN THE HUMAN RACE.

That is true of almost any party, JLM. No party is going to turn down a vote. For that matter if you want to join NDP, I don’t think anybody will forbid you. I am sure they can use the membership fee.

What I meant was that you won’t feel comfortable among the NDP supporters today. They are even more to the left than liberals like me.

I don't believe the Greeks of antiquity are the most appropriate analogy for the post-American polity which follows in America's footsteps. I suspect the Maya would serve as a far better analogy. The collapse of Mayan societies was followed by a dark age that did not begin to lift until the late twentieth century.

Idolizing the America that is now gone will only lead to political, social, economic, literary and other recriminations by its successors with living memory of Lady Liberty. That won't turn out well for anyone.

Ah well you gave it a good shot, the lady was a good hump for a while, stuff moves on though, despite the world series, you will be remembered for baseball and hollywood the grand canyon and some of the buildings
